D&D Movie/TV Here's The D&D Movie Trailer!

"Who needs heroes when you have thieves?" The movie arrives March 3rd, 2023. Here's the trailer! When they said it was inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy, they weren't kidding! We have dragons, owlbears, mimics, gelatinous cubes, quips, and more!

There was also a clip shown at San Diego Comic Con where the party cast speak with dead, and got to ask five questions. Also, apparently, the D&D cartoon characters from the 80s have a cameo!

Now?

Because the actors in fantasy movies were hideously ugly at some point? Tom Cruise in Legend? Mathew Broderick in Ladyhawk? Cary Elwes and Robin Wright?

I don’t really see a whole lot of difference here.
I am referring to stuff like Half-Orcs and Tieflings that dont look 99% human and Dwarves and Dragonborn etc etc. The cast of characters look all plainly human with one slight feature difference or 2 (pointy ears etc).

I can understand not wanting to spend budget to do a Dragonborn, but a half-orc or at the least a different colored skinned Tiefling is a matter of make up etc.

They took the safe and easy route. Doesn't mean the film wont be fun.

One of my pass times when I'm bored is to watch trailer reaction videos. Partly because it's amusing and partly because it helps me check my experience against people outside my usual social circles. The reactions to Honor Among Thieves have mostly fallen into three camps.

There's the people who have played D&D and geek out over all the familiar elements. There's the people who haven't played D&D who shrug and say, "Looks like it could be fun, maybe I'll check it out." And in between are the people whose main exposure to D&D is the Legend of Vox Machina animated series, who don't really understand the idea of two different characters having the same character class and ask "Is that Keyleth? Is the guy with the lute supposed to Scanlan?"

It's good to be reminded what context we take for granted.

Well, the movie's version of tieflings is a valid canon way to depict them, even in 5e.

I too do wish that the characters in the main cast had more D&D-racial diversity. I would love it if one of them was a Dragonborn or Orc or Drow. But it's not a big sticking point for me, and I can understand why they would want to keep their main cast looking mostly human for the first mainstream D&D movie.

I would add to that, people who started playing D&D in different editions.

The movie's designs refer quite a lot to 2nd and 3rd edition.

Definitely a fun trailer.

Someone once said that D&D is pretty "superheroish."

Maybe it's because I watched Thor: Love and Thunder not too long ago, but now I'm wondering if the MCU borrowed the sort of fantasy look from D&D in a sense.

Like seriously, I wouldn't have been surprised if this was a Marvel trailer.

I do believe this is the case.
D&D has been a sort of “golph” of Hollywood for a while.
