WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

WotC has shared a video explaining the Dragonlance setting, and what to expect when it is released in December.

World at War: Introduces war as a genre of play to fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons.

Dragonlance: Introduces the Dragonlance setting with a focus on the War of the Lance and an overview of what players and DMs need to run adventures during this world spanning conflict.

Heroes of War: Provides character creation rules highlighting core elements of the Dragonlance setting, including the kender race and new backgrounds for the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery magic-users. Also introduces the Lunar Sorcery sorcerer subclass with new spells that bind your character to Krynn's three mystical moons and imbues you with lunar magic.

Villains: Pits heroes against the infamous death knight Lord Soth and his army of draconians.

Notes --
  • 224 page hardcover adventure
  • D&D's setting for war
  • Set in eastern Solamnia
  • War is represented by context -- it's not goblins attacking the village, but evil forces; refugees, rumours
  • You can play anything from D&D - clerics included, although many classic D&D elements have been forgotten
  • Introductory scenarios bring you up to speed on the world so no prior research needed

Dark Sun is the exception because it actually does something with "worldbuilding by subtraction". It shows the effects of fascism by having Orcs, Pixies, Gnomes, and all of the other "missing" creatures be extinct because they were killed in genocide. Dragonlance does nothing with its lack of Orcs besides replacing them with draconic versions. Dark Sun shows the consequences of genocidal monsters gaining power.
Yeah, Dark Sun's pretty great. It's a good thing fans have been working to bring it into 5e on their own, since WotC never will.

Personally, I find draconians far more interesting than orcs in just about every way. Take away the ASIs and the cultural components and orcs have very little going for them that humans don't.

I personally think their origin story is way too stupid to make them interesting.

To be fair, he doesn't own Eberron, so he's legally required to be clear. If he did, it would just be his Eberron and your table's Eberron.
The point is, he never tries to claim his way is the right or only way to play Eberron, or that his canon should also be everyone else's canon.

That's a little insulting. If you don't want the developers to do some of the heavy lifting for you, why are you buying this stuff at all?
To answer for myself, it's to get other people's ideas. Otherwise, everything I do would be the same.

If they produce ideas I like, I can yoink them for my own game.

If they produce ideas I'm indifferent to, I can think of ways to make them more interesting. And yoink them for my own game.

If they produce ideas I hate, it means that I can think about why I hate them and decide if those are good reasons or not. Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not.

But in all three cases, it gives me something other than an echo chamber.

Maybe there was some miscommunication, but that was my position from the beginning.
Perhaps. Like I said setting purists or loyalists prefer an acknowledgment. It reflects a sense of respect for the creators and for those fans. The creators are not involved as it is, for DL loyalists that is already a blow and in order of this reimagining to happen some changes to the lore are going to be made.

Also, you've been making quite a few personal attacks during this tangent that I'm not comfortable with. If we're going to converse again in the future, you're going to need to stop.
Then I apologise for those personal attacks.

I personally disagree with the notion that setting "loyalism/purism" is good or should be acknowledged in a positive light. And I'm not certain that the involvement of Weiss and Hickman would be good for the new book or help with its development given their recent history with WotC and some of the problematic aspects of the original setting and novels.

And I accept your apology.
