D&D General Dragon+ Content Going Away -- Whoops, It's Gone!

WotC's online ezine, Dragon+, ended a few months ago. Until now the existing issues were still accessible, but as of today, November 15th, WotC announced that "Dragon+ will be removed from app stores on or around November 15th, and dragonmag.com will be redirected and its content will no longer be available".

If you wanted to save any of the content, do it quick, because it goes away today!

That might just be a bit of a stretch. My Candlekeep campaign is now just tipping over into 18 months. We play 3 hour sessions and we don't miss too many weeks, so, probably about 200 hours of entertainment for 6 people. So, that's about 1200 people hours of fun for about 30 bucks.

You cannot possibly have a cheaper hobby than RPG gaming.

I’ve spent a considerable amount more than that on my hobby stuff, but none of that was essential to playing the game. I did it because I wanted to.

On the flip side, I’ve got a player on my group that has played for over a decade without buying anything more than some dice. I think we’ve finally convinced him to buy his own PHB after years of borrowing everyone else’s.

I can understand not continuing it, but why remove all the previous content?

It was hosted by a third party company. The contract probably ran out. Or something.

I wish they’d put it somewhere else.

We see in this a major drawback to content that's not really ours...that is, stuff we access via streaming or logins is really not ours. Kindle books, online music, this...if it's not on your HD alone, or your record shelf, or your bookcase, it's not yours and you can't truly control when you can access it - or if at all - or what the content will be if you do access it.

I prefer traditional ownership. You write it; I'll buy it. If you want to go back on what you wrote, tough...I bought it and can keep it.

Bah humbug! Back in my day all we had was dirt. And we were happy to have that because, it's just dirt. None of that fancy-pants artisanal loam for us, no sirree. Dirt pies, dirt fortresses, dirt fights. And we were thankful for that dirt by gum! Now get off my lawn!

I mean, other than that, I agree. You could play for years with a little imagination and the free resources.

At least it felt that way to me in stark contrast to the meatiness of the original Dragon magazine.

I always felt that Dragon Magazine being a barely edited, yet canon, set of rules and lore expansions was just a drip campaign to separate me from my money rather than a quality product.

Dragon+ was pretty bad, as far as these things go, IMO. It certainly wasn't Dragon, Dungeon, or Polyhedron. It wasn't even Imagine.

As for the content, didn't everyone download / copy everything they might want the day it came out? I heartily recommend that in the future if something like this comes again.

I dint know if you’ve been paying attention or not, all the dragon+ issues are also available on the internet archive.

Imagine's adventures -- printed on heavier yellow paper in the centerfold of the magazine, for easier removal! -- and Pelinore articles were both great.

I'm sad that we never got a Pelinore compilation, although I'm sure the rights are at the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard."
