WotC's growing pattern of broken promises

Another case where a link would be nice. When did they promise that?
1994, after they released a promo called Nalathni Dragon and a bunch of cards tied in to early Magic: The Gathering novels.

Of course, the "no mechanically unique cards" promise was broken in 2018 with buy-a-box promos, so it wasn't even The Walking Dead that Broke that. They're released Non-MTG IP promos based on Hasbro Properties at cons, but these were always Silver-Bordered (and thus, not playable in any sanctioned format) before The Walking Dead SL, which is what REALLY got people heated up. If the Walking Dead cards had been silver-bordered, no one would have cared. But because they're black bordered and legal in Legacy and Vintage (and thus backdoored into Commander), this REALLY upset people.

I saw this thread on Twitter, and it made me think. What the heck is going on here?

WotC also recently broke the spirit of the Reserved List in Magic: The Gathering with their predatory 30th Anniversary Collectors Edition fiasco.

Does anyone have any speculation on why WotC's gone so unhinged?
Hasbro is not doing well, wotc is 70+% of its profits, and the board probably started screeching in thier ancient tongue, mouths agape, black shining teeth like polished obsidian and just as sharp, staring at Chris Cocks with their terrible eyes. So dark, no not dark but absent of color, absent of anything, windows into the abyss, the final void, “FEEEEEEEeeeeed….”

Something like that, anyway

Why does that remind me of this?

Definitely seems to me they've been acting in extremely bad faith

I think you mean estoppel, and the problem with that is, who exactly would the complainant be? Not most of their current audience or even most collectors, who have seen prices go up due to reprints in many cases due to increased demand. In the very common case of once-in-demand cards that are obsolete now, no amount of reprinting is going to budge the price of a Beta version, because it'll still be the Beta version and that's already the only thing it has going for it.

Very few people who want the Reserve List gone want WotC to reprint Black Lotus in a tournament-legal form or anything like that, that could plausibly hurt the value of someone's collection. That's a common strawman but I think everyone understands that's not going to happen no matter what.
I absolutely want that. I’d be happy just that it crushed the value of some people’s card collections, but more so that these cards were actually available for people to play with again. Games are meant to be played, not collected.

Its....always been a Collectible, Card Game.

And it’s always been meant to be played. I don’t think it was ever supposed to be “keep it in the shrink wrap” collectible. Do it WotC, break the reserve list promise, you clearly don’t care anymore anyway, do something good with your evil and reprint Black Lotus in a standard backed set.

The game can be played though.

I dont want to derail what is a righteous thread in terms of showing Wizards as liars and cheats though.
