We might want to start saving Websites

It occurs to me that a new OGL might be problematic for some websites, or sections of them.
So, they might take those sections down to avoid headaches (if not close up all together).

For example, discuss forms where people post custom D&D Content, Fan-websites and the like.

So, I'm making a list of websites I am planning to download/update my copy of as a 'just in case'.
If that occurs, I'll look into putting them online on places like Mega, or even via Torrents

Here is the list below of websites I have book marked that are still active.
If anyone can think of websites that should be saved, please add them.

Please note - with Discussion forms, it would just be the sections with custom D&D/D20/Pathfinder 1e/related content. I suppose I could do 4e and 5e as well, even if I don't personally use them.

Websites are definitely 'in the air' when it comes to the new OGL, as they aren't printed or static media.

However, most websites do not use the OGL. If a website doesn't use the OGL (such as this forum) then it's not affected by any changes to the OGL. This forum ain't goiing anywhere.

Sites like online SRDs and the like are more vulnerable, as they explicitly do use the OGL.

This is a wide jump... no. Currently I don't think so. WotC is backpaddeling.

On the other hand, some websites are a bit stretching fair use anyway. So even if they sued, I can't blame them.

There's nothing to stop them from suing people not using the OGL now. Or even people who do use the OGL for that matter. It's all a matter of how likely they are to try and how likely they are to succeed.

Basically, if you think WotC's likely to go all Nintendo on websites and start sending the Cs and the Ds, then the best time to back up material you might want was yesterday, because they will be no more vulnerable with the OGL change if it goes through than they are if it doesn't.

To put things in perspective, WotC at one point in time put a lot of old TSR books up for free download, but have since taken them down (mostly to sell them on DriveThruRPG). You can still find them for download on legitimate non-piracy sites (not mentioning which ones for obvious reasons), and there's no way WotC isn't aware of it, yet they haven't been taken down. And that's not fan content, but honest to goodness copyrighted material that WotC indisputably owns.

My guess, unless it's perceived as "competition," WotC isn't going to do anything because it'll cause more backlash than it's worth. The whole reason they're willing to brave the backlash on the OGL is because they think they'll come out ahead.

But again, nothing wrong with making backups as a precaution in any case.

So back in the 90s TSR threatened to do exactly this sort of thing. They sent out cease and desist letters to fan sites all over the internet to tell them to take down material that infringed on their copyrights. And they weren't talking about copies of their published work, they were talking about anything that discussed D&D at any level, including fan created monsters, character, adventures, settings, etc. They claimed that the terms Armor Class and Hit Points were their intellectual property and demanded that sysadmins delete what we called "net books" at the time because they were using their property without a license.

IIRC they threatened the Ars Magica archive even though there was no D&D material on it and on Usenet I recall other folks saying that they also got the order even though their ftp sites had no D&D content on them at all just other RPG content. However I don't think anyone actually got sued over it, just a lot of bad will generated with threats. IIRC eventually they hired Sean Reynolds to be their internet guy and he worked his tail off trying to calm everything down.

That incident is one of the many reasons Wizards felt like they had to issue an OGL to the fans in the first place, just to assure everyone that they weren't going to go off and sue everyone. So yeah, I can kinda see why people would be worried about history repeating.
