OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

We want to thank the community for continuing to share their OGL 1.2 feedback with us. Already more than 10,000 of you have responded to the survey, which will close on February 3.

So far, survey responses have made it clear that this draft of OGL 1.2 hasn't hit the mark for our community. Please continue to share your thoughts.

Thanks to direct feedback from you and our virtual tabletop partners it's also clear the draft VTT policy missed the mark. Animations were clearly the wrong focus. We'll do better next round.

We will continue to keep an article updated with any new details posted here or elsewhere on the OGL. You can read it here

The linked FAQ (no, not THAT linked FAQ, the one where they say the original OGL cannot be revoked, I think we're supposed to ignore that one!) indicates that recent rumours about $30 subscriptions and homebrew content are false. They also say that they will be revising the 'harmful content' morality clause in the recent OGL draft, which in practice gives WotC power to shut down competitors at will.

You can still take the survey here until Feb 3rd.

Dooooo iiiiit. But do it subtle-like.

When I dye my hair (I do it at home in my own bathroom) I always apply the dye, put the foil on, wrap my head up in foil, and then GO TO BED with foil on my head.

I wind up with the -darkest- blues and purples you've ever seen in your life. Where it's just -subtly- not black... But when hair falls in front of my eye and there's a light behind it -I- get to see how vibrant the color is.

Then, over the course of weeks, the color fades and grows lighter and more obvious. And at that point I'm sharing my colored hair with the world.
Just got back from lunch and a woman in the table next to us had wonderful purple. I recommend purple!

PS - great idea on the stealth coloring, particularly since my hair is black. Well, it is more salt-n-pepper now, but it was black!

Exactly. Nobody but a judge can say for sure what the legal status of those commitments is, and I'm sure you could find any number of technical loopholes in those past statements.
Agreed. It's not a loophole until someone successfully jumps through it. If a judge or jury says no, then what WotC thought was a loophole might be something more like this:

OH.

Don't bleach it if it's salt and pepper.

JUST dye it blue. Only the "Salt" bits will get dyed that way, and it'll look like you redyed your hair touch of grey style, but then you'll get BLUE HIGHLIGHTS over time!

Officers of the company made statements saying it was permanent and irrevocable. Regardless of legal shenanigans, they should stick to that promise.

So, suddenly and unilaterally trying to break your word is kind of a jerk move, I agree.

But, "You made a promise 20 years ago, and we will not even consider changing the arrangement no matter how much the world has changed," makes you the kind of person nobody wants to do business with.

There were far better ways to manage this, yes. But, having flubbed, standing there demanding that WotC get absolutely no changes whatsoever is not a way to move forward with a changing world.

WotC's stance on the OGL 1.0a is to revoke it. The community's stance that the OGL 1.0a should not (and cannot) be revoked. They know this. We know this. This survey feels like a waste of time.
