The fact that you can persuade someone that a lie is the truth, or deceive someone into doing what you want and the game says that both times you should assume you're using Charisma just doesn't pass the design smell test.

Now, if Deception were instead a use of cunning and falsehood to trick someone into trusting you, then that seems like a different skill. But that's not actually how Deception is described, and putting it under Charisma doesn't really reinforce that they're different skills, either.
um, that is precisely what the difference is...

Deception. Your Charisma (Deception) check determines whether you can convincingly hide the truth, either verbally or through your actions. This deception can encompass everything from misleading others through ambiguity to telling outright lies.

Persuasion. When you attempt to influence someone or a group of people with tact, social graces, or good nature.

I feel like, to sum it up succinctly, Deception is trying to convince someone that your lie is the truth, while Persuasion is trying to convince someone that your opinion is the truth.

IFor my part, I've been following the playtest in case they come up with any ideas worth importing into my game, but so far nothing worth adding in. I certainly have no desire to buy any of it.
I like a lot of the ideas I’m seeing, not always the implementation. Primarily what I like is that I can use it in our current 5e game and with our current house rules without any problems.

I’m curious about the fighters too, particularly since I play a fighter (like half of my group)

Meh. Still looks like you stand around and hit stuff until it dies. Give me maneuvers. Give me new stuff within the framework. I'm not holding my breath. 5e is fun enough, it just doesn't excite me at all.

Curious, what do you find bland about martials? I have a great time with my battlemaster. Not sure bland = not fun, but that is why you implied to me
They're limited in function because WotC makes everything interesting into magic. Battle Master should be a baseline, not a subclass, and they should get more utility features for outside of combat.

Even the 4E fighter could have used a bit more to do outside of combat.
