D&D (2024) Do you still feel that One D&D is "Compatible" with 5E?

Do you still feel that One D&D is "Compatible" with 5E?

  • Yup, still compatible. No issues with bringing in 5E Druids etc

  • Nope, perhaps some similarities but yeah it's too different for 5E stuff

Looking at the class changes like whats up with the Druid, do you still think it's "compatible"?

If someone shows up to your OneD&D game with a 5E Druid or Paladin or whatever, is that fine? Older classes and/or races being different and/or better....?

I am thoroughly unimpressed with OneD&D, feeling that most of it is a combination of lateral moves and downgrades from 5e designwise, and what actual improvements there are tend to be blindingly obvious hacks. Nevertheless I really don't see how it is incompatible really at all, at least at the moment. You (at least generally) can't mix a 5e subclass with a 5.5 class, and some basic common sense has to be used in terms of mixing races and backgrounds of the two systems.

But the core rule changes seem so superficial I really don't see any reason yet why someone bringing a character with a OneD&D class to a 5e table would be a problem, or vice versa. They would still need a copy of the core rules from the system the table is using handy, so it's a bit inconvenient, but given that the current system practically begs players to truck around a PHB, Xanathars, Tashas, and whatever book they dug their race out of, bringing two PHBs doesn't seem like a problem.

My only real problem with the arrangement is that if the player running a 5.5 character is someone who needs help or monitoring I won't be able to provide it without learning this shoddy remix of 5e. I've spent my 5e days as the helpful rules reminder and explainer guy, but don't really care to learn a second variation of every class mechanic just so I can continue that after WotC's pointless brand refresh. It's going to be a tough transition.

Do I think it is compatible? Probably.
Would I allow any of the OneD&D classes in a 5e game that I was running? Not based upon what I have seen to date.

One D&D is just a playtest. We can playtest it in our current 5e games, or avoid it, as the group desires. It's for people who enjoy playtesting, not some kind of obligation.

The 50th Anniversary Core Books
will be another thing entirely, and there's little we can predict about what it will look like until it arrives.

We can inform the latter (to some extent) by giving feedback on the former, though!

Depends on what you consider compatible. So far I believe One D&D is backwards compatible, meaning that all the adventures, monster tomes, magic items, etc will be still valid (or made quickly valid with a tweek here and there). Do I think that you will be able to mix and match 5e vs. One D&D classes... Eh, sort of. I don't think that they will be balanced. If you want the old classes, then don't upgrade. If you are moving forward with the updated D&D in 2024 (provided the development stays true to the basic mechanics of 5e) I think you are going to be just fine.

But this is pure speculation on my part, proof is in the pudding. I don't know how this poll is going to tell us anything meaningful as it is working with a fraction of the info we are going to need to truly judge the updates. Frankly all it will do is take the temperature of those willing to take your poll. As a side note your single poll question is way too narrow. You really need a series of questions that will tease out why people feel one way or another. Or even a third option. Good luck.
