5e is officially just Dungeons and Dragons. 1D&D is the codename for the initiative to revise the current rules. It's only when promising that 1D&D will still be 5e that WotC accepted defeat that 5e was D&D 5e and not the only D&D.
I mean, they have 5th edition on the back of the core books, so they conceded a little already.

I think 3.5 is really the problem here. They already set a pattern for what happens when you release a revised version of the current game, and I just can't imagine we'll be having discussions where we discuss "3.5 and R5 both involved changes to earlier cover systems from 3.0 and 5e." Just the weight of historical precedent will push the discussion toward 5.5.

And as always, the very idea of releasing a new D&D that isn't versioned is of course ridiculous. We will always need terms to discuss the various versions.

Do you think there will be a game out there run once it comes out that has a 2014 normal fighter playing alongside a 2024 fighter that has access to mastery and all the fun toys in the new weapons list? For me that's the gauge if it's really backwards compatible.

Then we're gonna need another label. Even if they're compatible, 1D&D and 5e look to be different enough that they won't play quite the same. So we need labels to differentiate them so that it's clear which game we're talking about.

that is not measuring compatibility however, so as a gauge for that it is a failure.

Also why limit it to fighters
