D&D (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

that is not measuring compatibility however, so as a gauge for that it is a failure.

Also why limit it to fighters
Niche protection, and narrowing the fighter / caster divide. There are some who argue that cool toys have to be exclusive to the class or they don't count for those purposes.

It is not limited to fighters. It is more or less limited to the warrior group.

But I guess the rogue will have some masteries too.

Actually the game would probably also make sense if the put the rogue in the martial category, the ranger in the priest category and the bard to the mages.

On the other hand, maybe experts have a second job attached to it mmby design.

I meant measuring the compatibility, not the weapon mastery. I understand the mastery bit

I still can't help but wonder if there will be a signature feature that will be available to every class group is defined by having access to "blank." From the first UA, we know they plan to use Class Groups to determine what items you can "attune" to or which feats you can access. But it's starting to look like there will be signature ability as well.

Experts: "Expertise"
Priests: "Channel X"

If correct, that's why Paladins are considered "Priests," and Rangers and Bards are "Experts."

So far, we can only speculate on what the signature feature of the other class groups might be. However, they haven't used access to "spells" to differentiate the groups so far (otherwise Bards would be "Mages," and Rangers would be "Priests"), so I wonder if they've come up with a signature feature for both of the other 2 "class groups" as well.

I guess we'll find out in a couple weeks, but does anyone want to speculate wildly before then?

And to those people I say, "you are drastically limiting your creativity" magic items that give a weaker form of a class feature to players are fun, and if your interested in checking some out I can dig up some of my magic item ideas at some point, all of them give a limited version of a class feature to anyone who attunes, to it but give extra uses of the associated feature or augment it if attuned by someone who already has that feature through other means.

except that this is not what they were talking about, it was about the same feature being shared with other classss

Hasbro stormtroopers (so, Cobra soldiers, I guess) are on their way to your door now.
Damn that Corporate Commander!

Did the 3.5 changes have any effect besides doubling down that Small characters should just be rogues and casters?

I don't feel like adventures are the major focus of backward compatibility, but rather mixed edition parties.

Previously most weren't saddled with the expectation of reading the DM's mind as to what tomorrow's encounters will be.
Rangers became more than a one level dip. And they added cute little "hey did you know you can optimize your character?" sidebars like how to break poison saves with a Dwarf and AC with a Halfling Sorcerer.
