D&D (2024) Take A Closer Look At The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide

Wizards of the Coast has just shared a video delving into the upcoming One D&D Dungeon Master’s Guide, due for release in 2024.

Sure, I get that. The contrast with One D&D is interesting though. There were a bunch of actual products released that were labelled as "Playable with the D&D Next rules". The same is not true of One D&D; as far as I know, that label hasn't appeared on anything WotC has released (which, to be fair, is only four UA articles so far).

Right, because 100% interoperability is a central design goal, literally every 5E product serves that purpose.

They also refer to it as an "update", an "evolution", something "built on top of" the current core rules and even "the next generation".

One might easily imagine the team was told "you can call it whatever you want, as long as you never utter the word edition"

That's because TSR and WotC mangled Edition to the point where it useless for communication in regards to D&D.

"Hey, people say it's confusing to find information in our book."
"Maybe we should try including an index."
"Nah."

The Rules Cyclopedia in the DMG and Rules Hlossary in the PHB should suffice as a reference tool.

So... is that dragon art new? Is that gonna be the cover to the new DMG?

I was wondering that myself. I assume they'd announce it if it was the cover. I assume it's something that's planned to be inside the new book.

They've got that chapter now. It's how they refer to talking about the planes.

Yup, Chapter 2 in the 2014 DMG, Chapter 6 in the new one.

I hope they do a better job with optional rules inserts this time.

Also: Downtime. I'd like yet another revised pass at it (Xanathar's was much better, but the system still isn't there yet).

Also: Exploration. There's still gotta be a bit more going on here, IMO.

Finally: Are we going to get to playtest any of it? They told us we would, but with all the playtest delays, I'm starting to wonder.

The art was part of what they showed at the Crwator Summit, along with a similar piece for a Black Dragpn. Dunno if it was concept art or from the new MM.

I wish the moderators would stop all this talk in every thread about what this edition is called. Sigh.

Here's a new thread where we can centralize all the "is it a new edition" talk instead of spreading it out over every single thread: Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

That sure feels like the 2024 art director was impressed by the Chroma Collective in the most recent season of Vox Machina.

So the secret chapter… how to build your own castle / run your own kingdom? I believe they wanted to include something like that and I am not seeing it in the other chapters
