The only thing more insulting than putting Flex in front of us as a worthwhile choice, was hyping it up as good design and impactful. We are not as stupid as you would like to believe we are Jeremy. The scarier alternative would be that he honestly believes what he was saying about Flex with Todd Kendrick.

Well, he believes that new players are too stupid to pick a subclass at 1st level so he probably thinks we will believe that flex is a good and interesting design.

I can see this line as right considering what they think about the intellect of the average Fighter player. Also keep in mind that these are the people that put Versatile in print.

I'm going to go out on a limb for a second and come out in Crawford's defence here.

Flex is just a simple and straight forwards damage boost. Its not tactically complex, it doesn't do much other than add an effective +1 damage average.

There is a significant amount of simple Fighter fans who want a lack of tactical complexity. No weapon swapping, no martial dice. They're the ones who made the Champion Fighter the single most used class-subclass in the game.

It seems like Flex is designed to appeal to those simple fighter lovers. Just give them a longsword and viola.

Lets not insult people's intelligence over this; that's just gatekeeping. Flex is designed to appeal to people who want to shut off their brain and just smash things. Which is valid. Don't like it? Then don't take Flex. Its not meant for you, its meant for others.

It could still be a useful passive for those players instead of just significantly less useful or powerful than any of the others.

One small quibble: Some of us do not want to "shut off [our] brains and just smash things." Some of use want to focus more on the environment and having more control over our characters' narrative in regards to how attacks work.

Then avoid picking Flex (which should be to d12). Flex exists for people who want to switch their brains off - but that doesn't somehow mean that Topple, Cleave, and Push don't exist.
