Welp, no need for the demodand/gehreleth slash form any more; it's "demodand" for the foreseeable future. Which is fine, as that's the original 1e term before the Satanic Panic forced the name change for 2e. The only one left of those is "yugoloth", which is reasonable since daemon and demon are obviously easily confused.
The text in the book flat out says "Demodands, also called gehreleths..." in the entry, and the individual names used for the three types of demodand - "farastu", "kelubar", and "shator" - come from the 2e Satanic Panic era just like "gehreleth" does. They were originally "tarry", "slimy", and "shaggy" demodands, respectively, which also make a return as alternate names in the individual entries shown in the book.

Either term is clearly intended to still be applicable, but they had to settle on something as the default.

I prefer the panic-era names, personally.
Same. I'm fine with devils, demons, demodands, etc. as terms that mortal scholars have come up with to categorize such entities, but I also like that they have their own names/terms for themselves that don't necessarily match up - kytons not being baatezu despite being commonly known as "chain devils", tanar'ri and obyriths as two very different "families" of Abyss spawn despite both being lumped together as "demons", and so on.

That's true. I like that they added the Feywild and (to a lesser degree) the Shadowfell to the Great Wheel for 5e, but jettisoned the rest of the World Axis.
The only concern here is that Feywild eats some of Arborea's vibe, and Shadowfell eats some of the Gray Waste's vibe. I think these can still be separate, and I like a fey realm and shadow realm that aren't aligned intrinsically, but making both planes have some of their own thing going on is something I'm curious about how WotC might thread. Might not find out in the Planescape product, which...okay!

Actually this is incorrect. The MM 2 Demodands were called the faratsu (tarry) demodand, kelubar (slime) demodand, and shator (shaggy) demodand. The proper names were there from the start.

Ah, seems my minimal familiarity with 1e comes back to bite me in the rear. Fair enough.

Might have also been an assumption influenced by Pathfinder's initial version of demodands using the "tarry/slimy/shaggy" naming convention as well, presumably due to OGL stuff.

I guess this does confirm that the Minsc' and Boo's Journal of Villainy book was indeed third party or at least not canon - since the Demodands in there had completely different art and stat blocks (no summoning for example, Farastu was CR7 and could get weapons stuck to its skin).
Love the new art for them, and the descriptions are spot on. No mention of triangles or Apomps, though.
Can't wait for the miniatures from Wizkids. I do wonder if Shator will be Large sized.

Yeah, I wish they would call them Tanar'ri and Baatezu and Gehreleths more. Though some sources still do mention these names. It especially got more interesting around 3E when we had Demons in the Abyss who were NOT Tanar'ri.

I've had my eye on that supplement. Is it worth it? I'd definitely want it in POD form. I'm just not sure I'd ever really get to use it.
