Take this post on another forum with a bit of salt because this reflects January in the playtesting, but it breaks down the similarities and differences between the two games.
Thanks. It sounds like the friendlied up SotWW not just in aesthetic, but some other ways that make 5E more popular (higher power levels, less likelihood of death, more options, etc...).

Yeah, the Quick Play seems to show a different initiative approach than the one described in that thread. Also, there seems to be some split personality about how it handles movement--it doesn't seem to want to use a grid, but it still defines movement in terms of yards, so...

Not only that, but Schwalb kinda talked of SotWW as his own spin on Greyhawk, Gygaxian fantasy, and D&D. Much like Zagyg represents Gygax in the setting, the Weird Wizard is very much Rob Schwalb himself.

Ah. I personally don't have any love for Greyhawk. no hate either, I just never played there. I was a BECMI (Known World) kid and until Eberron came around the only other official setting i every used was Dragonlance.

Is there any innovation besides it being a little less offensive? because i love the Diablo vibes from SotDL.

(supposedly)
Magic is changed quite a bit. Instead of having slots, each spells has a specific number of uses per day. And each tradition is split into 4 tiers: Starting, Novice, Expert and Master. The Paths you choose gives you access to the higher tiers of a specific traditions. Like only the Woodwose Master path will give you access to the higher tier Wood spells.
