Fine. Try this ...

Third is the best album Portishead ever did.

That's an unpopular hill I will die on (I am always unclear what thread I am posting in!).
Third is good, but Dummy edges it out for me because of “Sour Times”. That- as well as certain other songs by other artists in other genres- is a great illustration of the power and importance of making music that stands out instead of blending in.

I was part of running a new record label’s focus group session for their stable of young rappers. One of the rappers had sampled some bouzouki music, but it was waaaay down in the mix. I explained to the label’s CEO/50% owner that making that sample more prominent in the mix could greatly improve the odds of success for that track. Her first reaction was a surprised double-take that I had even noticed the sample. After that passed, she asked me what I was talking about. I pointed out “Sour Times” as an example- its use of unfamiliar instrumentation cut through everything else that was on the radio at the time. Love it or hate it, you knew in SECONDS that song was playing, eliciting the appropriate reaction.

Me, just happy that people aside from me actively discuss Trip-Hop music.

I should really give Portishead a proper listening. I had a girlfriend many years ago who loved them, but I just couldn't get into them at the time.

@Snarfzagyg, I respect your preferences here. I love Nirvana. But to this day Live Through This is one of my go to albums; for happy times , angry times, sad times, housework. Nevermind, not so much.

@Dannyalcatraz , perhaps I should enter Violet into the "songs that should have been hits" thread.

"The ol' fun-destroying ball-and-chain I have to check in with every few hours" and similar is an absolutely insane way to describe/run a relationship dynamic (or even joke about the same) and should draw appalled stares from everyone around you, instead of sympathy and shrugs.

Too many of my straight friends are clearly not okay.
