D&D 5E What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

An example of the latter came up recently: the party I run had become dependent on magical light sources, and ran into a null-magic zone. All their lights go out. Total darkness. Frantic digging through possessions lists on character sheets turned up three (3) torches and zero (0) lanterns in a party of six. Oh, and somebody had a candle.
Did any of them have flint and steel? If not... :P

The 5.0 wording on magic items being for sale is a lot more encouraging than I remembered it being.

Was crafting items (with the specific rules and costs for how to) a big thing in some 3/3.5/PF games?

The 3e prices for hirelings don't feel like they'll burn through much...
Alchemist 1g/day
Maid 1sp/day
Mercenary Leader 6sp/day
Sage 2gp+/day

The "Expanded Equipment List" in the 3e DMG includes...
Warship 25,000 gp
Castle 500,000 gp
Huge CAstle 1,000,000 gp
Moat with bridge 50,000 gp
... but that doesn't feel nearly as exciting as the level of detail in 1e (where you attracted followers in many cases and needed somewhere to stash them).
Those castle prices are crazy high!

The 1e DMG also costs out all the different parts of a castle so you can custom-build.

I have it. I don't think I ever actually used it. Like I said, players are pretty allergic to anything that smacks of a tabletop wargame. At least mine are.
My problem has always been that my players are generally allergic to anything that smacks of a ship.

I can occasionally get them onto the water, but the maritime-based campaign I've wanted to run for ages is still just a pipe dream.

Why? Well for one, it would show that the company actually cares about doing more than the bare minimum; I mean, this is an area of the game overripe for expansion.

For two, unless I'm the DM, most of the people I've played with seem to be allergic to 3PP; I can somewhat understand the sentiment, having endured the "d20 plague" when everyone and their cousin was cranking out products under the OGL of often dubious quality (granted, WotC wasn't immune to cranking out stinkers either, but at least their products got some use, unlike the stack of dusty books I have in storage).

This is the drum I keep beating.

5e’s biggest problem is the lack of trust in 3pp. WotC has made it abundantly clear that they are not going to fill in the gaps. They’ve been really up front about it. Repeatedly. For years.

Plus they actively pushed 3pp pretty hard for years. The 5e dragon magazines always featured 3pp products. Multiple ones. Then you have the Adepts on Dms guild as well.

Nothing seems able to break through this hang up people have about not using anything that isn’t WotC.

Hopefully with the new market on DnD Beyond they can finally break down that barrier.

I wonder how much of that thinking carries over from people who started (or are still in) AL or other organized play where only official first-party content is allowed?

I don't do crowdfunding but if I saw this on a store shelf somewhere I'd be mighty damn tempted.
there not being a big enough market for WotC to bother is not the same as there being no market at all.

There clearly is some demand for rules that go beyond what SJ offered, probably even for several different degrees of complexity.

That someone is publishing stuff for those demands is what separates D&D from other TTRPGs, so if this is something for your table, by all means, support it

quite frankly, distinction without difference here. the argument is still ridiculous.
you not agreeing <> ridiculous

They asked for a biological reason, that was not my idea. Feel free to find a better one for either side

If you disagree that this should be based on biology in the first place, take it up with them
