Modern D&D is a game of medieval fantasy superheroes growing into their powers. That's not an aspersion, that's what we the paying audience prefer.

And yet their powers are not taking from modern era comic books

Without D&D, the main source of the classic dreams in fantasy will be Comics/Manga (and their animated conversions).

You are way overestimating the importance of D&D on the core tropes of fantasy.

I would argue that a large portion of modern comic superheroes have powers that aren't very distinct from a high tier D&D character.

That only applies to casters. (as the length of a thread grows, so does the probability of the thread turning to the subject of the balance of casters and martials)
