Hard to accept there isnt going to be an implied setting when this is released.

PHB + Spelljammer + MotM + Planescape all with a FR lean.

EDIT: Actually, throw in Bigby's and Fizban's as well, both cover the lore from a 'multiverse' perspective, given WotC usage of the term.

Even an implied multiversal setting assumption would take for granted the existence of Halfling/Green-Dragonborn and so on.

Do you really want to have nicknames for each of the hundreds of permutations possible?

The use of the term "nickname" is biased and pejorative.

Honestly, I think this bit right here is a completely separate issue. I like what pathfinder 2e has done with planetouched, where it's a template which can be applied to any species.

It stands to reason that any species could be hit with planar influences.
And we're back to how you balance that. Feat Tax to play as Tiefling? A template that you overlay on your normal species abilities for even MOAR POWER? How about Lineages like in Van Richten, where the "new" species keeps its size, speeds, and bonus skills but loses all other traits to the new lineages one?

Feat Tax would be appropriate in that scenario. Fey Touched is in Tashas right?

It seems more helpful to divide up the species traits into feats.

Then a multispecies character can mix-and-match the species feats.

It is even possible to later express an ancestral heritage by selecting any species feat in place of an Ability Improvement feat.

wasn't there templates in previous editions, how were they balanced there?

No, that's not helpful at all. Other games have a build a bear species, no thanks.
