to me that was the extent to which automation can be overridden / turned off, rather than it not being available
Yeah, because it is less about being an automated solution and more about being an illustrative communication tool. Total DM control, not automation.

but the automation is available for 5e, you can choose to turn all or parts of it off. It does not exist at all for 3e, 1e, or 0e. So saying they all take the same effort is imo wrong, 5e can take as much if that is what you want, it can also be much easier, the others never can get that easy

I mean, that would seem to prove that the TTRPG market is overall being served by WotC right now, by and large. That some cannot find a different game or get other people to join another game shows that most of the people they know are satisfied with the 5E offering.

I see it more as an eternal september, where we've just been in a long period with a continually renewing set of new players, along with the standard inertia of switching systems socially.

That much I don't doubt, TTRPGs are hot right now and Dnd is the only household name TTRPG. My comment was more concerning playstyle preferences and unmet desire, as opposed to system selection.
Right, that’s why I meant to point particularly at the Bookscan numbers for adventures. They’re still amazing, and I envy them so hard. Righto the present, people keep buying a lot of stuff that they can use as prepared material for their own groups, not just the foundational material.

I've noticed it too. I feel like there are some groups on YouTube that have decided it’s cool to hate on WotC.
Oh, it’s a year after 1973.

I mean, yes, most players are younger: that's the nature of the game. Doesn't mean that WotC isn't servicing the actual market that exists, but rather supports that with your own observational evidence.

My only objection to having the VTT look like Arena is the animations being automatic rather than controlled. If my halfling has a five second series of flashing and twirling every time they move, please no.

Or chess for that matter.

Huh. Imagine a chess game using the animated monsters?
