D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

As someone who played FFXVI before BG3, I will warn you that FFXVI is going to feel incredibly disappointing by comparison.
Eh, I get it. The game has an easy mode, which is what I’m doing it on. FF games quit being fun except for story for me (apart from XIV, which has good gameplay and great story) with X.

Hmm, so I "saved" (and then fought) Nere with a Smokepowder Barrel from the goblins earlier. Then I went to find Philomene, and she's not there. Is that a bug, or a plot element? Does somehow the distant explosion cause her to go elsewhere to be seen later?

I did it in that order because I found dripping acid on the way to her, and had no more sleeps before Nere dies, so I wanted to not potentially get in a fight. Little did I know it's easy to sneak past that (at least it was for me).

If it's plot, I'm fine with it, but if not I'll redo. I also don't like that Lunkbug and the duergar I made a deal with got killed in my Nere fight, but c'est la guerre, if it's not a bug. If it is a bug, darn it, I gotta redo to avoid a bug changing the story. :)

Not a bug, her depature is scripted. She is on the run, there is no reason for her to hang around if she isn't needed to provide the explosive to free Nere.

Insulting other members
3. I expected to hate Karlach, but she’s my favorite NPC. Not romancing her until she gets some more content, though. She reminds me of my wife (though my wife has ordered me to only romance Shadowheart, and never Lae’zel, who she thinks looks like an addict).
Your wife is a racist, but hey, BG3 is racist as hell about Lae'zel as well, given her entire story arc is about how her foreign culture is savage and evil and stupid and how she should abandon her people and embrace white human society. (And given that Lae'zel can threaten to murder a tiefling PC and you're not allowed to call her out on that, BG3 also condones racism.)

And speaking of racism, don't get attached to Karlach's character or have any sort of empathy for her circumstances, because she has no good ending due to her plotline being unfinished. The writers didn't care enough about her character because she wasn't white and male enough for them to even halfass her ending, then insisted that death or damnation are the endings she "deserves". You know, for not being white.

Yeah, you're going to be disappointed with FFXVI, if you think terrible fantasy racism and stories that relish in the others being victimized are good storytelling.

Your wife is a racist,
This is not appropriate.

You joined a couple of weeks ago and already have 3 warnings for insulting other posters and multiple notes. Since the warnings don't work, we'll go for a temp ban this time. If that doesn't work, we'll need to ask you to leave.

Do not insult other posters.

I know the poster can't respond, but I find this a little strange as a comment, so I just wanted to dissect it a little:

1) Karlach now (and at the time the quoted post was written) has more of an ending than literally any other character, and in fact, her ending kind of overrides a number of other endings, potentially. Yes this was patched in after fan response, but it's no more "unfinished" now than a number of other characters. Arguably now she can have one of the most positive endings vibe-wise, albeit one likely to feature strife and struggle.

2) Karlach has white-approximating facial features in her current version, and is played by a voice actor doing an accent - sort of in-between Received Pronunciation and Estuary - that is very much associated with white Londoners. The idea that she's "non-white" in some way that would cause her to be victimized by the writers because the voice actor isn't white - something that's quite hard to find out, note (it's not obvious from her appearance) - is not particularly convincing.

Also the idea that the the Githyanki are unfairly treated is pretty amazing. They're actually handled with quite a degree of care that I didn't really expect and their motivations and justifications treated with some respect. Lae'zel has the best story-arc of any character in the game, and it's flatly wrong to say it's about abandoning her people to hang out with the humans - on the direct contrary, even, it's potentially about leading them in rebellion against a dictator.

Karlach has an accent?!
I mean, even Received Pronunciation is an accent, isn't it? It's just the accent of the establishment and much of the middle class and especially upper middle class, and was the accent of the BBC for decades, so tends to be overlooked at bit, at least when one is down south. And Karlach's accent is a mix of that and sort of Estuary or maybe Cockney, certainly East London.
