From what little I understand, a turn based CRPG hitting 5 million sales is FANTASTIC for the genre. Most never come anywhere near that.
we do not really have official figures to go by, but if the last game I made sold 5M copies and I essentially make a bigger sequel, I am not really expecting to sell less. Prudence says I should still turn a profit when I do, but that is not the same as expecting it.

I agree it is a surprise success, but saying no one, including Larian, expected even 2M is patently wrong.

20 million was probably more than they expected however.

I feel like BG3 benefited from the EA and gained a lot of good will from the fan base. I mean we are in a time where games are rushed out in a buggy mess and most games that should be really great are mediocre at best. I also feel like Stanfields issue is the fans wanted another Elder Scrolls game and have been wanting one for a while now. Instead we got what we got. Purely my own thinking here but I think Bethesda could have gotten more hype with a Morrowind and Oblivion remaster. I have Stanfield, I've played a little bit of it but I just can't get excited about it. I felt the same for Fallout 4. The fans are desperately wanting Elder Scrolls. We won't see a new entry for another 6 yrs or more.

Theologian did not like it. They also didn’t like Planescape despite it being well received so they call it a disappointment.
Spelljammer was an embarrassment of a release. It was wholly half-baked- straight copy+paste blocks of text from 2e books, monsters that can't use their own combos, and unfinished guides on making your SJ worlds.

Planescape is at least a finished product, even if folk disagree on the art direction, whether the adventure was good or necessary in lieu of a manual to the planes, etc etc.

their previous game, pretty much the forerunner for BG3, sold 5M copies on Steam... and that might be lowballing it, the same site has BG3 sales at about half of what I am seeing on another

"Approximately 21.22 million copies of Baldur’s Gate 3 have been sold on Steam, according to SteamSpy stats acquired by Steamdb.info."
Yeah, no.

There's a reason why Larian themselves have said nothing about BG3's sales, and that's because it certainly hasn't sold 20 million copies, no matter how much gamer dudebros treat it as the second coming of Christ.

If an unfinished piece of crap like BG3 can get anywhere near that kind of sales just because it glorifies abusive white men, relishes in victimizing women and queer people, and spouts all the racist and anti-immigration dogwhistles, while games made by competent developers get bombarded with abuse and threats for having non-white males on the cover, then gaming truly is a cesspit.
