D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

You don't use minion ogres unless you want them to be mowed down. Maybe you like tracking 15 orcs individual hit points, I have better stuff to do.

However, even low level fighters took out ogres faster in 1/2E. A couple of hits and dead.
Exactly my point. I have zero interest in changing the mechanical representation of a creature for narrative reasons. Zero.

Yes? I'm not sure I understand you, that's just how the rules work for everyone...
I talked about the rules I used in one of these interminable threads stating that at in my game 4th level the fighter's minimum damage was 6 pts. The usual hp of a 1HD monster was 6. This allowed a fourth level fighter to routinely take out 2-5 targets a round depending on how hot their dice were.

I favor adjustments to the 5e rules that would allow this, but it would change some of the fundamental math. I, too, don't care for the 4e minion rules for reasons similar to yours. I figured that 4-5th level was a reasonable time for a fighter to clear out a patch of foes weaker than themselves, and made adjustments accordingly.

They are the same monster.

Again this is a limitations of the base mechanics.

Stating the base mechanic doesn't handle something doesn't mean the whole mechanic is bad. It just means it can't handle it. So it just needs an alternative rule or a change to the rule.
My alternate involves not using 4e minion rules.

Which, (unsurprisingly, I'm sure) bugged me too. Like if we fireball a room full of normal orcs, they are basically guaranteed to all die. But if they're supposedly easier to kill minions, some are likely to survive. o_O
Yeah, it was an interesting choice.
It made minions a more meaningful threat than traditional low-HD monsters, both because they could hit you, and because they couldn't be casually anihilated en masse by casters - TBF, they'd be more than decimated, you'd easily blow up like 1/2 to 2/3rds or more of them, controllers were spectacularly good at clearing minions. They also speeded up combat in that you didn't ever need to roll damage against them, and simplified combat because you didn't track their hp.

I still do not understand... This is already how it works. Or do you mean too few monsters have HP so low that this would matter?

I mean that monster hit points are elevated to the point where that effect happens rarely.

Someone mentioned before that ogres have 50 some odd hit points. I would expect that a 12th level fighter would make short work of a squad of 6. Apparently, this is not the case.

Every class is predominately about combat. The Fighter's just the only one that suffers for it.
Well, I disagree with the former. However, I will bow to your superior knowledge of 5e for the latter. I find it bizarre that the fighter is the worst at fighting, but you've played more of 5e than I have.
