I mean... not sure that's more complicated than remembering that 19 is a crit and what you do when you crit.
But ok.

Still doesn't make it different from the Champion.

I mean, either one would be fine. But we definitely don't need 2 simple fighters.
The point is that you can make the Brute more complex without needing a UA.

Because the Brute mechanically and flavorwise does not do anything but have bigger numbers. In contrast to the EK which has magic that can perform many effects. IT doesn't even have a skill buff like the Champion.

You can damage, save bonus, healing and AC buffs complex.

Same with the Champion.
Sure but they can't change the Champion without a UA and the Champion is already rated high as a simple class.

The Brute is the only subclass you can alter without a UA. If they are not doing another UA, it's gonna be a reprint of a published subclass or an adjusted Brute to a long rest or short rest subclass.

Why not?

Small changes don't need to be tested. They're about to include a subclass that's never been tested.
You're confused about the conversation.

  • The Battlemaster, Champion, and Eldritch Knight are confirmed for 2024 and out the UA stage.
  • The Brawler is cut from the 2024 PHB.
  • They are stopping playtesting on the Fighter.
  • The 4th Fighter subclass has to be a subclass that does not need public playtest.
  • It has to be a reprint of a past published Fighter subclass, an adjusted published Fighter subclass that they already have data on what to fix, or a UA fighter subclass that they have data on
  • The PHB subclasses were chosen as opposed pairs
  • The Champion (simple strategy) was paired with the Battlemaster (complex tactics)
  • The Brawler (uses nonweapon attacks) was paired with the EK uses (spells)
  • The Brawler is cut from the 2024 PHB.
  • The chosen subclass will likely have to pair with the EK
  • Out of what is available the best contrasts to the EK is the Psi Knight and the Brute.

If they are not doing another UA, it's gonna be a reprint of a published subclass or an adjusted Brute to a long rest or short rest subclass.
Turning the Brute into a short or long rest subclass sounds like a pretty big rewrite to me. One worthy of a UA.

Also kinda undermines the flavor IMO.

The Brawler (uses nonweapon attacks) was paired with the EK uses (spells)
I assumed it was "prepared" vs "improvised".

But yes, muscles vs magic would be a decent pair. That's fair.

Though maybe
Champion (muscles) vs EK (magic)
Battlemaster (calculated) vs PDK (emotional).

No, it was not.bettee. Mearls went over this in one of the Happy Fun Hour episodes, theybhad strict math showing thst it was the exact same power Level as a Champion. But it failed because enough people perceived it to be more powerful. And if people dislike something mechanically sound because of a perception the D&D team is willing to let it go to pasture.
I'd have to see that math, because my gut tells me that a scaling extra damage dice that's added to all attacks is pretty much always going to be better than a 5% increase in crit range.
