Also, this talk about Yellowstone being just a "rancher" show ignores one of the most significant things that I have heard about it: that its portrayal of its Indigenous characters is multifaceted and has depth, which, if true, is a lot more than can be said about a lot of other properties. In any case here is at article written by Elamin Abdelmahmoud about it. Do not dismiss it because it was for BuzzFeed: Elamin was hired that same month to do a program for CBC, the Canadian national news network.

I mean, if we are looking for a multifaceted portrayal of indigenous characters with depth, maybe (just maybe) we should be looking at Reservation Dogs and not Yellowstone?

Not to put to fine a point on it, but one is about indigenous characters, written and directed by indigenous people, and starring indigenous people, and the other is about ... well, let's just say that it is starring Kevin Costner, Klly Reilly, and Cole Hausner, and written by Taylor Sheridan.

(That's not to say that Yellowstone doesn't do a creditable job in its portrayal, but I wouldn't exactly hold it up as the gold standard.)

To invert a common aphorism about free content, when I am paying for the product, I shouldn't also have to be the product. Operating theaters this way while implying that the audience should enjoy being the product feels like an approach calibrated to create resentment.
Welcome to the bind that movie theaters are in. They're paying most of the money coming in from ticket sales back to the studios and distributors, particularly the first couple weeks after release. So much of the revenue coming in to pay their staff: concessions and ads.

You got the right of it. YS depictions are almost nonexistent. Folks should look to Dark Winds for something in the crime noir vein that has actual multifaceted depictions of indigenous people. Hell Longmire even does a better job of it. However, none of this changes the fact YS is bad or prevents the criticism of it because it has indigenous characters occasionally.

I mean, I don't know that I'd call Yellowstone bad, per se. I think that it is very good at what it is trying to do- make a soap that is visually stunning, and appeals to a large segment of the population that doesn't think that they're watching a soap. Basically Dallas, but with better acting and locations. And if that's what you're into, more power to you! I think that shows like Fargo say more about 'Murikuh than the mythologies of Yellowstone, but a lot more people watch Yellowstone. I'm not going to yuck on their yum- after all, I did enjoy the Arrowverse, and it was more soapy than a truck filled with Tide detergent crashing into a river.

But yeah ... the "you can't criticize it because of the portrayal of indigenous characters," is certainly an unexpected take.

Um... you realize that the people you assert "can't carry the lead" seem to all be women?
We had 3 Star Wars movies staring daisy ridley and 2 ms marvel movies with Brie Larson. All 5 are pretty bad. You have a new director for Ms marvel it it’s a disaster and yet you have wick 4 which outperforms and you have a kids toy turned into comedy drama in Barbie which by the way has a female lead

Back to Yellowstone and Kelly Reilly. Kelly nominated but didn’t win a golden globe but Costner did and the show has won a ton of awards. I would argue for a majority of the public based on popularity it’s a better show the most of the marvel Disney stuff.
Yellowstone makes money and has spawned spin-offs. It sells merchandise and other product’s want the name Yellowstone attached to it such as cars kitchen aids booze etc.

So my boys cast argument
Karl urban-
Antony star
Erin moriarty
Colby minifie
Giancarlo Esposito
Etc
Look at the totality of the cast and rank the totality of kenobi/she hulk/Loki etc but in my opinion the show has better acting. Has better fight scenes than most. I’d argue the same with Yellowstone with the exception of mandalorian . And the budgets for these Disney shows are through the roof! The cartoons are way more memorable. I have way more investment in the fate of a certain clone trooper than a Loki sidekick

Book of boba fett/kenobi not well acted and for the most part not great action. Andor has good acting and memorable fights
