Adventure Time TTRPG Drops "Yes And" System, Switches To 5E

Changed made based on feedback from fans.

When the Adventure Time roleplaying game was announced back in June, it was going to be using a brand new RPG system called the "Yes And" system, which involved dice which had Yes and No on one die, and things like And or But on the other.

However, publisher Cryptozoic Entertainment has recently indicated that, following fan feedback, the upcoming Kickstarter will now be powered by 5E instead. The update was included last week as part of the FAQ in its current Adventure Time card game Kickstarter.

Has Adventure Time: The Roleplaying Game changed since you announced it a few months ago?

Yes, we made the decision to make it a 5e experience, based on feedback from fans. That doesn’t mean the game shown at Gen Con earlier this year won’t be released too, but the main offering in the upcoming Kickstarter will be the 5e RPG.

That's not how (good) KSs works though. If you don't have the system design locked down by the time you come to KS, then fulfilment will likely be significantly delayed. Even KS that have a locked down book can still take 18+ months to produce physical books in the current climate.

They have given themselves an extremely short time to switch systems to one that is a relatively complex exceptions based rule system. And this is for an IP that is well known for its freedom of creativity and extremely varied characters and stories. I think it is entirely sensible to be cautious about what this will mean come February.
Well, I will be checking it out now, which I wasn't going to do before.

I think they could make a great 5e game. I imagine it could be tuned to a very Adventure Time feel.

The thing is the Yes/And system was extremely simple to pickup and with the ratios in the dice and the picked scores in the sheets it was also incredibly flavorful. At first I chalked a lot of it up to the DM running it, and he was good, but when a couple who said they tried several times to “get” D&D or Avatar but failed and just so easily clicked into this game and ran with it, I knew the combination was special.

Clearly they think more people will join up following this news than will leave. I hope they're right. I love Adventure Time, no matter what system they end up using. I backed the Avatar KS even though I had no intention of using their system (way too narrative for me), just because I wanted the kind of worldbook they promised. I stand by that decision, and may very well do the same here when the time comes.

I think they can get both. And more people will try Yes And with 5E at the front.

5E is perfect for Adventure Time IMO. I'd make some modifications to the core system, but if you've ever played 5E with silly kids, or just silly people in general, it ends up playing out like an episode of Adventure Time.
What class is Jake? BMO? LSP, Hot Dog or Fire Princess? Lady Rainicorn?
Who's the party when the group is usually 1 or two people? What's Magic Man's spell list?

It's not D&D.

I submit you'd have that experience with silly kids playing almost any system, especially if 5E wasn't fighting that kind of play.
