I don't think GoG3 was a great movie, certainly wasn't as good as the first two, but was successful for legacy reasons. (This doesn't mean I thought it was bad, I just don't think it measured up).
Oppenheimer wasnt that big of a surprise. Folks look forward to Nolan films, and critics were giving it high praise. Its not like this film came out of nowhere. Not a supers flick, sequel, nor nostalgia bait.
Barbie wasnt really much of a surprise either. Well, for folks hip to those involved with making it anyways. It was all down to the execution and it worked out as expected; a hit.
Across the Spiderverse is going to be the Matrix Reloaded of the Spiderman franchise...
Woof...this thing was waaaaay too long. Also, ends on a cliffhanger? After more than 2 hours?? The third film now has a ton of weight placed on it to carry this thing. Good luck!
Now that that is out of the way, Spiderverse works because of its animation style, use of music, and good writing. I agree with you there...so far.
I have never seen a Greek Wedding, fat or otherwise, so cant comment on it. I'd bet legacy pulled it over though.
I'd say the message is pretty unclear. The reasons for these films success is disparate and nuanced. There is nothing you can point to as a silver bullet here.
did you read my post? The main message is have a good story, execute it well and it'l probably do well. Have a hollow souless story held up by illusions and CGI and it'll probably not be a huge hit, or even a decent success. IMO the studio's suits and number crunchers thought they'd come up with a perfect formula to feed the moronic masses and here we are with them trying to figure out how Barbie, Oppenheimer and My big fat greek Wedding 3 are all considered bigger successes than any of thier formula movies. And just for the record, Even the director and producer's of Barbie were shocked by how well it did. it was supposed to be something like a Mario Movie as far as popularity.

Dude, I haven't been to the movie theatre since 2018, amd at this point kind of doubt I would ho back. A month of Netflix costs less than a single ticket.
Everything is relative. Living in a third world country, movie going is quite affordable in comparison with a month of Netflix which is more expensive than what I pay for all other streaming services combined. I can get ten movie tickets for a little more than a month of Netflix!(ten simple or four premium)
