D&D (2024) [+] Future of The SRD Speculation Thread

4e was never in the OGL and doesn't have a usable SRD. It is a different animal. Moving previous editions is still listed as in there plans. Notice it is listed as "upcoming." They are clearly focusing on the core books.

Errr I'm confused - you said they were going ahead with the 3.XE ones but not the 4E ones. But this doesn't indicate that. Both 4E and 3.XE had SRDs, whether you consider them "usable" or not.

Yes, based on the videos they were not sure about 4e. The reason being...

...4e does not have a functional SRD like 3e and 5e. If you are not familiar with the vast difference between what exist for 4e vs 3e & 5e I suggest you educate yourself. Remember, 4e was not part of the OGL so it did not have the same type of SRD support. WotC would essentially have to create a completely new 4e SRD. Unlike 3e and 5e were they just need to review and revise the SRD to remove IP.

I am familiar, so this is pretty funny. My point is, you're making claims without supporting sources - now you've clarified that it's on some video somewhere, fine, but either way if they don't do 4E, despite it requiring a bit more effort, I absolutely will hold that against WotC, because it's drastically more important to do that for 4E, and than to merely create yet another way to use 3.XE, where there are a multitude already. If they're serious about wanting to preserve games and make previous editions possible to create content for - and they did seem to be serious at the time, that will require some effort. Nothing worthwhile is free of effort.

the 5E SRD contained a few references like "Strahd von Zarovich" and "mind flayer," and since Creative Commons has no concept of product identity, putting the SRD into CC meant those names were released for anyone to use.
oh yes, imagine they also released the aboleth name or something with the 3e SRD, just look at all the damage making the terms 'mind flayer' and 'Strahd' available has caused WotC...

Using the name doesn't give people permission to use them in any and all fashions tho

I'm not sure what else might be included, but I think you're bang on with these two.

Feats I'd expect at least a level 1 feat, a level 4 feat, the ASI feat, and if there are still feats with a higher level prerequisite, at least one of them; just to give people using the srd some idea of power level.

Weapon mastery needs to be in since it's a core feature of a handful of classes.
  • Every class.
  • At least 1 subclass per class (but I hope for all subclasses) If they only include the Fiend Patron warlock, it doesn't make sense to add the Invocations intended for other Patrons.
  • Every species.
  • Every background.
  • Every 1st level feat that is granted by a background.
  • A smattering of Level 4+ feats, if not all.
  • All spells.

I expect everything that's already in the srd to still be in, so races, classes, and all the spells will be in. I wouldn't expect every subclass or background, probably just one for each class and a single background example. Makes sense that the 1st level feat be tied to the background though.
