D&D (2024) New Dungeon Master's Guide Cover Features Venger (From the D&D Cartoons)

The cover of the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide has been unveiled.... in the Mirror, a mainstream newspaper in the UK.

The cover art features villains (as opposed to the heroes on the Player's Handbook cover revealed last week), with skeletons in the foreground, the classic villains Skylla and Warduke in the mid ground, and then Venger from the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon looming in the background, and right at the back lurks a dracolich.

The DMG will be released November 12th, 2024.

I mean, to me in 2014, he was. I had no idea who he was at the time, I hadn't read Tomof Horrora yet and Tomb of Annhilation was a few years out. If WotC plays their cards right, Vwnger can be iconic in a few years.

Yeah, same. I had no idea who that was supposed to be or anything. Just like the Fire Giant King on the PHB, no clue who he is or why I should have cared.

As for this cover... something isn't clicking for me, and I think it is Venger's Arms. I think my eyes keep wanting to make the main bones in his wings the arms, which they aren't, and the asymmetrical spell effect doesn't help. It isn't bad, it just keeps tripping me up.

This has been the MO for D&D for quite some time. I'm a Gen X but I do not suffer from nostalgia. How many different versions of the same thing do we need? Doesn't anyone else think its time for a new direction for the game?
What do I know?
It would be nice if they did do more new and original things in addition to them redoing classic adventures every edition.

Yeah, this is starting to remind me of the new Top Gun movie. A whole lot of "hey remember that thing" and very little substance.
Did the first Top Gun have substance? I like the new one better I think (ie I liked it well enough, was not impressed with the original one but it has been ages since I saw it)

Now that you mention it and like most art, if you scrutinize it, you see things you might have missed when looking at the totality of it. Now I can’t unsee Skylla’s left foot pose…is she wearing heels or standing on her tiptoes…but either way, it’s still better than most Wayne Reynolds feet :)
