Previews of the Dungeon Master's Guide start on October 1st. Today, Wizards of the Coast announced that they would kick off the marketing cycle for the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide next week with two videos. The first will be a general overview of the Dungeon Master's Guide, while the second will focus on the new Bastion system found in the book. The overview video will run on October 1st, while the Bastion video will run on October 3rd.

The 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide was completely overhauled from the 2014 edition and will feature new adventures, a Greyhawk campaign setting guide (and accompanying maps) and reworked magic items. The Bastion system will also appear in the new DMG and will allow players to create custom strongholds that provide mechanic effects during downtime.

The 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide will be released on November 12th, although the early access window starts on October 29th.

What makes the AI rules good?
They expand on the basic stronghold and running a business rules in the 2014 DMG. There are extra downtime activities related to running your business, the results of which can modify your monthly cost/profit margin.

You can also have employees, including a majordomo, some of whom can take business-related downtime activities on your behalf.

There are also rules for things you can add to your stronghold (extra rooms, defenses, etc).

It builds nicely on what is in the DMG and feels more … organic? … than the bastion rules.

Hey thanks! I realized I got the book for free on D&DBeyond some time ago so I took a look.

It's definitely more organic, which makes it a lot harder to use for me. That's what I like about the bastions, I don't have to do taxes and worry about money apart from them buying some cosmetic upgrades. AI feels like it's made for a campaign where the base IS the campaign, while the bastions seem to be built to be added to the side.

At least that's my experience with bastions so far. Easier to use, built to work with adventuring.

I hope this is more comprehensive than the "everything you want to know about the 2024 PHB" video, which fell short of telling me everything I wanted to know. ;)

Seriously, though, WotC: Gimme details on creating monsters, spells and magic items, and please tell me the 2014 magic items properties chart appears in the 2024 DMG.
Let me second you on this.

I can't say that it gives me warm fuzzies to learn that wotc decided the most important thing in the Dungeon Master Guide to highlight with a video of its own was a previously near unusable subsystem originally described by wotc as a thing to help players be their own little dungeon master on the side within the actual Dungeon Master's campaign. That does not telegraph strong indications of this dmg being written for the needs of the person taking on the role in the book's title.

Ah, the announcement of of the teaser of the trailer! My favourite time! I’m just upset they didn’t pre-announce that they’d be announcing the date of the previews. It’s almost like they don’t even care!
I'm happy to hear about it. The worry and grumbling inother threads has been… less than fun.

Have you used the Bastion system? It works quite well, so unusable is just not right.

And of course there is a seperate video for the biggest new rules addition to the DMG.

Let's be honest, the biggest reason they are adding a base building system is because they saw Strongholds & Followers do the numbers.
