Wait, you have players actually use background features? Wow.

In 10 years of playing 5e, i can count on my fingers and have spare for the number of times someone used those in any game i played or ran. Same with traits, bonds, flaws, ideals.

I think that is the most important aspect why they are gone.
I also can count on my fingers the times they were used, and when they were used, it saved a few coins or a skill check at most.

While I agree with the number of players I've seen use background features, I disagree on the traits, ideals, flaws, and bonds. Those have been pillars for a plethora of players I've had the pleasure to sit at the table with. I have seen it make beginners understand roleplaying, and I have seen it make good roleplayers even better. I have also seen it used by the DM to enhance story and create character arcs.

Picture I saw phrases it as "A companion to the fifth edition Player's Handbook (2024) and Monster Manual (2025)." Which is consistent with their messaging that this is still the same edition.

My fat fingers meant 2024, my point being thwt rhey are being consistent in their presentstion of this as 5E still. Here is the exact phrasing:

So the benefit is close to zero and the potential risk is higher than zero. It's simple corporate math, they don't want to spend money in the form of people's time to review for minimal benefit. Old grognards are the only ones who likely care at this point and they aren't the target audience for significant growth or income anyway.

They made that promise when they committed the OGL debacle. The benefit is not pissing off the people who remember what they said by making their promise into a lie. The risk to them if they don't put the old stuff into CC is far greater than if they do.

I'm confused, didn't it take 9 years before the SRD for 5e was into the CC? And wasn't the OGL for 5e released 2 years after?

Not really. For the first 8 years 363(or so) days they had no intention of putting it into CC. It wasn't even a thought in their heads. Once they made the decision, it went in very quickly.

I've heard people say this, just not sure where it came from or whom. I'm also not aware of any timing attached.

It will likely happen but not until next year when other products are finished.
