Dungeon Master's Screen (2024)

D&D (2024) New DM Screen Revealed By NZ Retailer

I feel the need to point out this was already revealed a couple weeks ago when the Core Books went up for Pre order on Beyond.

I couldn't find a thread about it here, though.

Yeah, it really sucks when you buy one only to be disappointed. 2E had the best DM screens. They've never matched that quality since.
Are you sure? There have been an awful lot of screens released since 2nd Edition, and some of them have been pretty decent.

Fun fact: This will be the 82nd screen released for D&D.

Actually, the 3E Kingdoms of Kalamar screen was very good too, but it was almost too much info and had so many panels that folded/unfolded in so many ways that it was unpractical to use at the table. IMO the 2E ones were a good balance between being too much and not enough information. They were the ones I got the most use out of. The 3E ones were decent but not quite as good from what I recall

One thing I liked about the first 5e screen was the “Something happens!” table. It was unique to the screen, and it was a fun little thing you could roll on during a lull in the game.

EDIT:

Also, as a father of three daughters, I appreciated that the player-facing art featured a bevy of female heroes front and center (with a token male off to the side):

That being said, it didn't have all the tables that I would have wanted to reference regularly,* so I swapped it out for the "reincarnated" DM screen when that came out, which dropped the unique "Something happens!" and "Quick Finds" tables.

I got the GF9 Tomb of Annihilation screen and used that while I was running that adventure, but otherwise I haven't used a DM screen in a long time.

*Early in 5e, I made myself a reference sheet with the other tables that I wanted to reference regularly, things like the Conversation Reaction, Weather, Wilderness Navigation, Foraging, Mob Attacks and Targets in Areas of Effect tables from the DMG.

I think what makes a good DM screen is very subjective. I'm surprised WotC hasn't created a screen that includes most, or all of the relevant tables from the PHB, DMG, MM that are magnetic so you can pick and choose which tables/information you want, and even customize them for a specific adventure.

I know (or at least I think I know) that it's not the intent, but there's something vaguely sexual and pervy about what those dragons are doing to the d20. The lines eminating from the center don't help.
