D&D (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Which was roundly rejected as being too setting specific for a generic fantasy RPG.

It's not lack of coolness that leads players to reject it, it's too specific an interpretation of how magic functions. It's like the weave. It's okay to say that the magic in a specific setting involves the weave, but it's not okay to say all magic everywhere involves it. Plenty of players do not want someone else's metaphysics imposed on their homebrew settings.
Have they said they're not using the Weave in 5.5?

given how some of DnD's most popular material takes the form of specific settings/entities/lore i think trying to be a 'generic' RPG is actively a hindrance to itself.

But please tell me who are all those people who would be negatively affected by that clarification.
Bob. Eileen. Frank. Ishana. Billy. Fyodor. Karen. LaMorne. Sheila. Bhuv. Huang. Jayson. Antonia. Faraji.

To name just a few. I'd go on, but I wouldn't want to waste your time naming everyone.

So. I am sorry for them if my preference finding its way into the 2024 books will hurt their feelings.

I hope it won't burst your group and hope you find a way to houserule to make them happy again.

Oh no no no... I don't play with any of them. They're annoying. And Fyodor picks his nose.

Honestly, even if I disliked the rule, I would love to see this answered, because I am really tired of people insisting that if I want to cast Charm Person on the guard at the castle gate I MUST BE LOUD ENOUGH TO BE HEARD CLEARLY BY EVERY PERSON WITHIN 300 FT! ENCHANTMENT MAGIC IS SUBTLE AFTER ALL, AND PEOPLE CAN BE AFFECTED WITHOUT NOTICING IT! WHICH IS WHY I MUST BE CLEARLY HEARD ACROSS A LARGE DISTANCE WITH ANY POSSIBLY AMBIENT NOISE! THAT IS EFFECTIVE AT ALLOWING ME TO CAST SPELLS ON PEOPLE AND THEM NOT NOTICE I HAVE ALTERED THEM WITH MAGIC!

It gets a little tiresome as an argument.
