D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I wish I could find a lovely meme that I saw, where the image says (to the effect of), "We play all sorts of TTRPGs here: we have D&D 5e and we have PF2."

That's pretty much the state of the market in actual play. 😒

Pretty much, except D&D 5e and PF2. Great if either one of those games scratches your TTRPG itch, but obviously not so good if it doesn't, as those two games are more alike than different when compared to many other games out there. So if you feel like you don't fit in, good luck to you in finding a group.

And yet, word on the street is that there's a scarcity of GMs, at least for 5e.
We have discussed before, and not terribly long ago. Opinions vary on whether it is actually true, but in any case it has a pretty easy solution: players should GM more.

@JohnSnow

I know I gave you some advice earlier, and I'm not sure if it's been covered yet, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the following.

As I've mentioned before, I've streamlined and modified 5e for an older group to make it more like TSR-era D&D. A lot of the simplifications and houserules are beyond the scope of quick advice, but I definitely should mention that there is another source of advice...

The 5e DMG. That's right, as we all know, no one reads the DMG!

But there are a bunch of optional rules in there that might help. One big one is the "gritty realism" variant.

It changes long rests to one week, and short rest to a night's rest.

It makes healing more important, and it lowers the amount of casting and "going nova."

A few notes from running it-
1. It doesn't solve the "attack cantrip" problem, to the extent that you believe that this is a problem.
2. In regular play, short rest classes are at a disadvantage; with this, short rest classes shine. If you use the rule as written, certain classes (monks, warlocks) under the 2014 5e rules will pop in a major way. If this becomes an issue, you may need to limit short rests (once every two days).

I know I posted to this thread before but inspired of my quick perusal of the boards today I wanted to say that while I feel like I can always find or make a way to fit in to D&D (because D&D is not "What WotC prints" but what we actually play), these boards are increasingly feeling like a place where I don't fit in.

I think that anytime we are approaching an edition ... change ... shift .. whatever you want to call what is happening now, we also see an increase in negativity.

Best to ignore the nattering nabobs of negativism, and talk about the things you love! Or, you know, focus fire on the those that deserve it. Bards.
