D&D (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

lol yikes.

This is right up there with another comment I saw on this forum about "a world of Post Literacy is good cuz youtube."

You all can enjoy having nothing and being happy about it, I'll be on my property, relaxing with the people I enjoy, and the things no corp can take away because well..I own them.
I thought the same until a flood ruined my books and I lost my PDFs (my flash drive) in a move across the country. Nothing is permanent!

EDIT: I didn't loose all my books to either tragedy - just a big chunk of them.

In fairness, it really does depend.

Sure, I like owning things. Property comes to mind. Books. THE SPACE IN YOUR HEAD!

But I have to admit, I never imagined that I could pay a small monthly fee and listen to any music I wanted to, always. That's kinda cool. And much better than a ton of CDs or tapes or even vinyl. Honestly, it's cheaper too.

Thumbs up is for the truth about the passing nature of all things, not for the fact that you lost that stuff: that sucks.

Hey, been there. I've also been in a place where "oops, that Hard Drive is nuked and you have no backup? ouch".

There is no solution, better than it would seem carving into stone, but I'll still take things I own, in my hand, over some file on a server that someone can turn the lights off on. :)

Shoot, I don't even pay for Spotify or anything similar, and already the convenience of access and quality mean I haven't bought an album in a long time (whenever the last Muse album dropped, but thst was rhe last time since the previous Muse album I bought a physical album).

It's the fees upon fees upon fees that bother me the most. Like, yes: I can pay a small monthly fee to set up Spotify. But without a monthly cell phone contract, I can't access it. And without a monthly internet access fee, I'll burn through my data plan in just a few hours. And...etc.

but you are not forced to get early access, so your not being forced.
I did not say you were forced to, you are not forced to buy the books at all, let alone preorder. It still is the only way to get early access

However, you are forced to get the digital + physical bundle if you want the dragon art book, which I do. I am still not get that bundle though.
no, the digital bundle is enough

How dem 8 tracks?

I'm not sure WotC is less ethical than a lot of other companies -- many of which, like Nestle, I avoid supporting at all costs -- but I purchase digital goods from itch.io and Bandcamp when possible, as they pass along much more of their proceeds to the creators than their competitors do. (Bandcamp also still periodically runs Bandcamp Fridays, where all of the proceeds from their sales go straight to the artists, which is great.)

But it's not realistically possible to do that 100% of the time, even if one were inclined to. As always, there is no (100%) ethical consumption under capitalism.

Thank you for sharing.

Even if I agreed with the last part of your post, I don't believe the choices to be 100% or 0%.

For the sake the conversation, let's say that my only possible choice is to play D&D. Okay, sure, that means I have to purchase the books from the company (WoTC) publishing the books.

However, maybe I forgo buying the "official dice," Matt Mercer's Marvelous Mustard*, or whatever else and instead purchase a polyhedral set from SJ Games (real product,) Paizo, or whomever else I feel is closer -or at least closer than WoTC- to the 100% than they are to the 0%.

(*to the best of my knowledge, not a real product)

This achieves 2 Things:
1) It stops rewarding companies for bad behavior, and
2) it helps support companies which you mind for palatable -meaning that the companies producing things you want (while treating the customer base better) stay in business and produce more stuff.

And to get and use a digital account.
if you are not on DDB, you won't preorder there either. Not sure the bonuses are enough to get you to create one when the actual books are not however.

Also, while you do need an account, you do not need a subscription for the bonuses
