Kulan: Knightfall's Heroes of Carnell Game [IC]

"Undead! Beware the touch!"
Angus heeds Litrix's warning as he steps forward and brings his powerful claymore sword sword down on the evil creature in front of Caerth's horse. The blade hits the undead foe once, twice. "Foul creature!"

The Northlander centaur brings his shield around to hit the undead creature in the head, but the thing manages to duck under Angus's shield.

Aureus curses as her horse reins up and bolts away from the undead foe in front of her. She lets the horse flee. She keeps her focus on the creature threatening her as she steps towards Angus. She slashes out with her short sword but the evil foe easily parries the first strike with its own blade and evades the second strike.

As the undead got closer, Phar could get a good look at the undead. He had read something about these creatures before....

For local rumours and info regarding these creatures.
When Angus attacks the undead in front of it, Phar can hear the centaur's sword slicing through cloth but not flesh. The blade tears away part of the undead creature's garments and Phar can see that the creature is primarily bone with dried flesh barely hanging from its body.

Phar recognized the undead as a skeleton, but these aren't normal skeletons. They are called brooding skeletons or sometimes just The Brood. These powerful skeletons are drawn to places that radiate evil and they are vulnerable to bludgeoning weapons that are magical. They also cannot be turned.

Wracking his brain, Phar tries to remember if he's read anything about these types of undead or in one of the books in the Boots' Sanctum during the short time at the ruins. When he sees the glowing eyes of the undead creatures, and their strange attire -- patchwork armour and wrappings around the creatures' arms and legs, he remembers a story he read in one of the books in Lady Pendour's small library in the manor back in Carnell.

That story, no more like a legend (or an old rumour, depending on the telling), goes into an ancient idea of a portal hidden in the wilderness that leads to a place called Ghostmoon Manor. The text in the book notes that the portal is supposedly located in a wooded setting and is guarded by a powerful group of brooding skeletons. The portal was created by a powerful fey mage named Tazryl whose has its origin in a place called the Mival Valley.

Everyone gets +1 circumstance bonus to melee attack rolls
+6 to damage when flanking

Litrix considered charging the leader, if it was one...but his marshal instincts prevail. Hopefully this one isn't some kind of caster that he just left to cast in peace. Or one that will get whole tribe down on them. But splitting their force in high risk situation like this is dangerous. He looks over the team spread as they are, Maur in the back which might be OK if he wants to cast, Phar in the back which is almost certainly fine, the rest are ok.

He decides to leave motivating them to move for later instead going for the minions to clear the area and immediate threat to them.

Urging his horse back toward the group, he angles it slightly so he doesn't have to force it to move directly toward the unnatural creature. As he goes, he draws Morsus Draconis which hums in the presence of the undead. Not its favorite prey, but they will do.

As he approaches, he dismounts on the shield side, protecting the horse. He tries to do it quickly, but with the shield widened and still moving with the sword, he waster precious moments to dismount. Still, he is close enough to strike and strikes strongly enough. It was a very precise hit, but weak because he didn't plant his feet properly as he dismounted. Still, Morsus Draconis delivered his hate against undead.

The brooding skeleton reels from the touch of Litrix's blade. It howls, quite unnaturally, in anger and pain. "Holy Warrior!"

The rest of the brood begin to move towards the group. Four of them move in from the southwest and southeast, more carefully. Another one rushes from the southeast with wild abandon straight towards Aureus and then turns north to hug the higher hills.

Caerth can send his horse's fear underneath him. The beast is not a warbred steed and its instinct is to flee. The half-orc druid knows he's not a highly-experienced rider, so he urges the horse to retreat as he dismounts the beast. The skeleton reacts to the horse's mad rush away from combat, striking out with its longsword. The blade cuts a deep wound in the beast's rump, and it neighs in pain as it runs away to the north.

Caerth's feet hit the ground a moment later, and he pulls Thundershadow from his back and strikes at the undead foe in front of him, snarling in anger. The magical quarterstaff cracks bone and it hits the undead foe's front torso.

The skeleton on the higher hill moves northeast towards Quinn. It moves calmly towards the gladiator-knight. It sneers at Quinn and yells out a challenge. "Come, warrior! Face me! Do not cower on that beast in fear!"

@ScottDeWar_jr, roll a modified level check (1d20+12 +2 Wis bonus +1 morale bonus for Litrix's Resounding weapon). You only need to beat a 10.

Phar could feel the horse starting to panic and decided to let it run. He leapt down off the horse but, as he dismounted, he landed flat-footed which cost precious seconds to recover his balance.

He'd wanted to move and give Aureus his mace but he could see the brood was trying to surround them. Even if his companions were hasted, the undead would cut off their escape.

Instead, he decided to limit contact and make the undead pay dearly for daring to advance further.

He looked up and cast a powerful spell,

Tine, adeirim thú

From the ground, flames sprouted up in a vertical gout that caught two of the undead fully within the fire as the wall bisected the battlefield, leaving most of the undead on the other side, forced to deal with scorching heat.

  • Move action to dismount (failed my quick dismount)
  • Let horse run away
  • Cast Wall of Fire
Any undead within 20 feet take: 4 fire damage
Any undead within 10 feet take 11 fire damage
The two caught in the wall take 34 fire damage
Wall of Fire damage: 2D4 = [3, 1] = 4
4D4 = [3, 2, 2, 4] = 11
4D6+22 = [3, 4, 1, 4]+22 = 34

At first, the flames seem to hover against a magical barrier but Phar powers through the magical resistances of the brooding skeleton. The two in the wall burst into flames but don't fall to the ground. The both howl in anger.

All but two of the other skeletons on the other side of the wall are singed as well.

OOC: @ScottDeWar_jr, I'm going to wait for your reply on Discord, but I wanted to post this regardless.
The skeleton on the higher hill moves northeast towards Quinn. It moves calmly towards the gladiator-knight. It sneers at Quinn and yells out a challenge. "Come, warrior! Face me! Do not cower on that beast in fear!"
Quinn looks towards the undead foe and almost bursts out into laughter. The evil thing greatly underestimated Quinn's resolve. Then, Phar's Wall of Fire burst across the landscape. Two of the skeleton's go up in flames in the heart of the wall. The skeleton closest to Quinn also catches on fire, and it crumbles to the ground.

Flames singe several of the other skeletons trapped on the other side of burning wall.

Quinn notes that several bushes caught within the wall also go up in flames. Hopefully, the magic won't cause a brushfire.

The brooding skeleton that challenged him curses to itself loud enough for Quinn to hear. The undead creature is smart enough to know the tables have been turned.

Quinn ignores the boasting skeletal foe and quickly dismounts from his horse and moves to engage the skeleton standing amid the others. He knows Cruel Justice won't do as much damage as Caerth's magical staff, but he doesn't have a bludgeoning weapon.

He swings the blade with all his might and the blade cuts deep through the skeleton's bones at the shoulder. The blow would have been a grievous wound to living creature, yet the magical blade still manages to inflict a large amount of damage to the skeleton.

OOC: Attack roll on the OOC thread. It was a critical hit.

The two skeletons in the high hills east of you try to retreat into the craggy mounts from the flames of Phar's wall of fire spell. The undead show that they have enough intelligence to realize the danger, and they seem to be try to move up into the crags to hide from the heat and move around the edge of the wall.

It is slow going for them, but they manage to hide behind two high crags that shelter them. But, they remain on the other side of the wall. They will have to face the heat again before being able to move around the wall.

Maur dismounts and casts something. It sounds like an avalanche coming down from the mountain, but nothing happens.
"Do not go toward the guy Litrix spoke to unless you move first so you're in line with Litrix and it. And do not deviate too much on either side. I've left access in case it starts casting. But it goes nowhere."
