D&D (2024) D&D species article

Actually no.

Tieflings and elves already both have the "lineage is just different bonus spells" design. Aasimar/ardling would have been a third built on the "you gain X cantrip, Y spell at 3rd and Z spell at 5th" system.

Further, aasimar's iconic ability is its wings. You'd have to figure out how to incorporate them into the mix and going by elf and tiefling, lineage spells don't leave much power budget for other things.

So, no I don't want all the planetouched species to be the same chassis with different spells. I like the aasimar is different and kinda wish elf and tieflings felt more different. Cie la vie.

I'm talking more lore then mechanics.

That might be out if date.
Athletics
Your Strength (Athletics) check covers difficult situations you encounter while climbing, jumping, or swimming. Examples include the following activities:

  • You attempt to climb a sheer or slippery cliff, avoid hazards while scaling a wall, or cling to a surface while something is trying to knock you off.
  • You try to jump an unusually long distance or pull off a stunt midjump.
  • You struggle to swim or stay afloat in treacherous currents, storm-tossed waves, or areas of thick seaweed. Or another creature tries to push or pull you underwater or otherwise interfere with your swimming.
Other Strength Checks
The DM might also call for a Strength check when you try to accomplish tasks like the following:

  • Force open a stuck, locked, or barred door
  • Break free of bonds
  • Push through a tunnel that is too small
  • Hang on to a wagon while being dragged behind it
  • Tip over a statue
  • Keep a boulder from rolling
Current Strength Check rules.

Bolded for emphasis.

There is a new PHB coming and there might be some new uses for Atheletics, maybe even ones connected to crafting like being a blacksmith.

Poweful build's only purpose is to represent more carrying capacity due to large size(mass). Every race that has it is among the largest PC races. It fails to realize that that much size and mass = strength. Look at Andre the Giant who was in really bad shape. He was as strong as he was due to his powerful build.
I am surprised this is something you can't understand, but I am done trying to explain it.

The above "brute force" tests is what I want the Weightlifting skill to cover.
Agreed.

If Acrobatics and Sleight of Hand are 2 skills Athletics and Weightlifting could be.

It being Olympic season you can really just slot species into certain sports

Orcs as the Athletics Species
Goliaths as the Weightlifting Species
Halfling as the Artistic Gymnastics err... Acrobatics Species
?? the ...

What sport is Sleight of Hand? Table Tennis?

Not officially.

Athletics officially is Swim, Climb, or Jump only.

Official as stated by the PHB, lifting, pushing, or pulling a heavy object is a straight Strength check.
You are correct, which is stronger proof stat lifting/carrying in 5e is straight strength and should provide a stat bonus. ;)
