No one answered this so I will, it literally uses branches and roots of the World Tree to extend their range with attacks. Like swinging your great axe with branches to slash them.

Do we still have the option to play a game without feats and multiclassing, or is it mandatory now?
They are not listed as optional, but I'm sure that a group could decide not to use them.

Multiclassing can be ignored (same as always), but feats are more baked in. Backgrounds give an Origin Feat (instead of a bespoke background feature), humans get an additional Origin Feat (Like V-Humans in 5.14e), Fighting Styles are now feats. But when you gain a feat, you have the choice to take an ASI Feat (which is the default choice).
