D&D General What Races/Species do you think are missing from Dungeons and Dragons?

Correct. WotC D&D is a D&D, not the D&D. They only own it in a legal sense.
The D&D players own the D&D tradition. The WotC corporation is a "custodian" that services the players and looks after the brand.

Recent events put that premise to the test. But the outcome, along with its CC SRD, confirmed, it really is the players who own D&D.

The outcome of the D&D controversy helps my faith in humanity.

Currently, there is much agitation by autocrats. But humanity will choose personal freedoms.

For me it would be races based on dogs. Large dogs could be trackers and attack dogs while small dogs could have resistance to being frightened.

What races do you think are missing from Dungeons and Dragons that should have already made it in?
Were-wolf template.

Shifters.

Not the same. Close though.

Hive minds. Swarm of ants or Hive of bees. Or even a school of quippers...

IMC Gnomes are a eusocial species and thus have this ability whenever a troupe of 5 or more gnomes are together - they get Gnome awareness (advantage on wisdom checks), Swarm movement and Coordinate (a pair of gnomes can perform two actions simultaneously or one gnome can take the Help action to assist the other)

While I figure it raises all sorts of balance concerns, I do feel that there should be room for talking/awakened animals as playable options in D&D. Even if not a core race like dwarves or elves, at least a supplementary one like genasi or tritons. They're such a huge archetype in so many cultures around the world that it feels odd they're not a viable playable option.

I should note that I'm speaking of beings fully animalistic in form; we already have quite a bit of anthropomorphic races out there.

After the success of Balder's Gate, I'm surprised that there is not yet an option to play a Mindflayer.

They're a PC race in Mirt's Undermountain Survival Guide, which is part of the DM's Guild Adept program. So while not completely "official," it is the closest thing we'll get to 1st party content for them.

There's a great option for talking animals in the 3pp Oz book for 5e. Not sure what the name is.

I assume you don't care where the options come from.

Is this the book you're referring to? I haven't read it, so thank you for pointing me in its direction.

I presumed that the OP was talking in a more official sense for missing races; if you include 3pp stuff there's probably something for everyone out there. The balance and playability, on the other hand... :X
Yes, that's what I meant.

I care not for officialdom, and have no special place for WotC in regards to balance or playability; to me, they're just another 5e content producer, and one who have largely stopped making content I feel is worth paying for.

Folks who hang on WotC's coattails for content are IMO severely restricting themselves.

Many of the larger third party publishers have as good, if not better, balance than some of the WoTC content. Especially recently, the WotC stuff has been fairly lacking in that regard.

I feel like after Tasha's WotC started down a slow decline. The more recent adventure paths have been, in my opinion, awful. And WotC has been bad at encounter design forever. For races I've had no issues with Kobold press, Mage hand press, Level up, or Ghostfire.

EDIT: The list isnt exhaustive. Just the one's Ive tried.
