How do you think the mechanics of this should work in melee and at range? I assume if I minor illusion in melee to create a crate to hide my little guy in it, an opponent can walk into my space and the illusion is broken but at range they would need to use an action to see through it for it to not offer some degree of cover. Assuming they know I'm there and want to shoot through the illusion what would be the cover amount offered?

in 3.5e this would be 50% miss chance if you hit AC, so this could be disadvantage in 5E as you attack invisible enemy.

Is there a rule saying when you know an object is an illusion, it becomes transparent? If so I'd go with 1/2 cover. If the object stays opaque, I'd go with disadvantage.

Not sure all the 2024 changes on illusions, but in 2014 you seeing an arrow pass through the illusion would allow you to see through the illusion.

I would rule that the enemy gets disadvantage to hit you if attacking the illusion due to not being able to see you provided the illusion is small. I’d much larger than your space I’d only let them hit on a nat 20. However, since you are in a cramped space and get readily move normally (unless the illusion is large enough) I’d rule that provides enemies advantage, thus cancelling out the advantage and disadvantage and they attack normally.

After they’ve shot the crate with an arrow I’d rule every enemy knows it’s an illusion and can see you. I’d have them attack you normally then as well on the presumption you know this and no longer attempt to stay in the illusion.

illusions are tricky.

if you shoot an arrow then you interacted and only you see it.
Others just might explain to themselves that the crate had a hole between boards and the arrow passed there.
Maybe you can spend an Action to point out to others that it is an illusion.
