D&D (2024) DMs what do you think of the new PHB?

Fair enough. I have no problem with people objecting to my objections so long as they're respectful (although I admittedly have issues with folks presenting opinion as fact).

Mostly I just want more people to support and play Level Up.
Absolutely. That's why over the last year or so I've purposefully been reminding myself to add in more "In my opinion"s and "I think"s into my posts just to drive home the fact that I'm talking about my own personal feelings and not some generalized truth.

I mean more often than not, normal forum discourse implies that most statements given are in fact meant to be interpreted as opinion without the need for "I think"s added through every post. But depending on how... strident... someone gets their opinion across, it can make the reader sometimes feel like its no longer an opinion but instead a statement of truth with the implied "And you're stupid for not knowing it!" following along behind. And that's where potential hurt feelings come into play.

But the book is for all players, old and new, so it can't realistically be considered a general success if we only talk about how great it is for part of the player base it.

Because he wants to play in a game he enjoys (understandable), but instead everyone seems to be running games he doesn't enjoy, because the vast majority of folks run the latest official D&D, and he doesn't want to play it. The RPGs he likes exist, but not the actual games in his experience.
I sympathize with you to a point…

But If the only way to call a game a success is to please ALL players…eek.

That is nonsensical. Nothing ever has nor ever will succeed in that case

Where are your actual play examples, threads etc that will show the world what is good about this system?
I know you like to write up extensive actual play examples of the games you enjoy, but that's not the only way to spread the word and provide support. I usually post on my phone, which makes long posts annoying. Another issue is that starting a thread about Level Up pretty much requires it go in the Level Up forum, which pretty much means only people already playing or at least interested in Level Up will see it. You need to post in the general D&D or general TTRPG forums to avoid preaching to the choir.

However, I have started a new Level Up campaign recently (with two pretty much new to RPGs players, one new to Level Up, and two veterans), so I'll see what I can do.

I asking for a value judgement that doesn't focus just on getting new players, not literally all players.

Like everything else, it's a spectrum.

I think that the point was that "new players" is a subset of players that is too small and ephemeral to carry that load. A statement like "4e is great for a certain subset of wargamers∆ who like XYZ". That subset of players was chosen for purposes of discussion but could reasonably be assumed to still be a valid as a descriptive labeling of those players after weeks months or years. However "new players" is a subset of players that players will grow out of over time as they become experienced players.

∆ Not trying to edition war or pigeon hole anyone with a label. Mentally fill in whatever target group you think fits better if you disagree with that one. I personally bounced off 4e but know it had fans and am not trying to classify them by giving a hypothetical example label.

What do my fellow Forever DMs think?
Of our two groups, we have about 7 of 12 who DM somewhat consistently - rotationaly.

1 who has only dm'd 5th, likes the changes. 6 of us whom have dm'd 5th, would not dm 5e again( I DM'd 5th/AL for 6 years/starting gencon '14), and one dm only continues to do so for 5e because he is paid! lol

I looked over the changes, they doubled down on the meh imho. 5e has a DM problem, and instead of fixing the issue, they gave pc's even more powers to forget or waste time deciding on. Then said, hey lets go AI.. the AI can handle it all.. we shall see..

I signed up for prj. sigil just to get a glimpse of it for free - 99% likely not going to play after that. the fanboy 5e dm, will likely run 5-2024 for us to try at some point, when everyone else needs a break. We had hope for him when he picked up The One Ring, but.. after a year.. yet to crack open /sigh

Too bad. The One Ring (either edition, but I prefer the first) is a great game. Great Tolkien emulation.

Have you considered creating a Tik Tok account? Creating Level Up content on Tik Tok would garner far more support than any amount of posting here.
