D&D 5E Looking for Ideas: Enhancing a Forgery Kit

Stalker0

Legend
My players have gotten a special boon. A magical family has offered to magically enhance an item of their choice. Interestingly, they choose the rogue's forgery kit, with a focus on "accuracy".

This is not a by the book item, its meant to be a special custom unique item, something special for the players for their efforts.

So I'm looking for ideas, it can be a pretty strong item, the party is 12th level so something in the very rare tier I am comfortable with. Any thoughts on cool abilities to give this kit?

perhaps +X to Deception and/or Performance skill checks when attempting to duplicate documents or works of art (+5 or +10?).

Also, a few charges of the spell illusory script and perhaps magic mouth might fit it.

I want to say that I thought there was a magic item at one point (no idea what edition it might have been) that was a set of paints that if you used it to paint something it would magically turn into that thing. So you paint a door on a wall and the door would actually be created and appear. Paint a dog and a dog would sit up from the image. So perhaps that is what this "super-accurate" forgery kit is... one of those types of magic items. The kit allows you to create forgeries so accurate on paper or solid surfaces that they become real things?

Marvelous Pigments, a Very Rare magic item in the DMG and Basic Rules.

bump, going to unveil the item in the next session so one last chance for another ideas before I decide!
The regular forgery kit is specifically for forging documents, so you could expand this in a few directions.

  1. Allow it to instantly copy a document a certain number of times per day, with some minor alterations - so for instance, if you have a valid document like an ID or a party invitation that's in one person's name, you can immediately run off a few copies with the details of the PCs or whoever you want substituted in.
  2. Allow it to copy even magical text, creating working copies of spell scrolls up to a certain level.
  3. Allow it to create forgeries of other things, like jewels or coins, that remain intact and authentic-appearing for a limited time such as a day or a week before decaying into scraps of paper.

Are they now using the sleight of hand skill to use forgery kit, and if so, you gain advantage already if you have both.

Making a cool item should allow you to make a Xerox copy of a document using an action instead of a day. Allow you to pull out a matching type of paper/parchment/vellum/animal hide/ etc... a number or times per day to match something being copied. Maybe even a 1/day power to swap a forgery with another document within 30ft with some sort of teleport.

Give it some bonuses (advantage? Or +1d4?) to deception, etc, when used. Possibly Insight or Investigation checks made to learn things from writing.

Also add a few magic charges per day that let the user do things like cast Illusory Script, Nystul's Magic Aura maybe even Suggestion or Glyph of Warding to anyone who reads text written with it.
