It's not about rights, is it? We all have lots of rights we choose not to exercise. Just because we have the right to do something doesn't mean that we should do that thing. I don't insult people in the street, though I have the right to. I don't refuse to tip, although I have the right to. I don't walk slowly down the pavement blocking everybody's way, although I have the right to.

"They have the right to" isn't the magic bullet you think it is.

It seem strange considering WoTC and KP’s collaboration early in 5E and now with DDB. I find it tacky but not so off putting I wouldn’t back KP if they actually started making material I liked again. I do wonder what It says about the sales of ToV outside the kickstarter. My local hobby shop indicated ToV hasn’t moved as well as other KP books because who needs essentially two PHBs that don’t align. But that is just anecdotal of course.

For the record, I think this is bad form but it’s hardly the crime of the century. If it were my book they were targeting instead of WotC’s I’d be annoyed. An objective review is one thing; a marketing piece disguised as one feels disingenuous to me. I wouldn’t do it. But that’s just my take.

I will say, in comparison, Morrus and EN Publishing have been pretty chill and classy about the new 2024 books. They don't have to publicly compare, as they let their work, and their fans, speak for themselves.

I mean, you actually do host independent reviewers, who do get in depth and even critical. But I have never felt that one of the hosted reviews on this site is a negative sales pitch for a different product...

Well, we've been publishing news and reviews for 25 years. We know what the basic ethical rules and conflicts of interest are. You'll never see me review a product and compare my own to it.

(Well you won't really see me personally review anything; but I will recommend stuff I like)

Would Kobold Press get a big boos in sales for their line if they managed to goad someone at Hasbro/WotC into taking Book of Ebon Tides and Tome of Beasts off of DDB in a snit?

My expectation of such an event would be a small bump in sales as some folks would check out the books (with a side of sticking it to the Man), followed by a long-term loss because they lose out on a fairly big sales channel.
