So what are all you Shillelagh wielding rangers going to do about all the flying enemies kiting you from 62 ft.?

The general expectation players have of adding a ranger to the party is they want someone who will be good at long range.

have a wizard cast Fly on us, obviously...
The wizard is already concentrating on flying the barbarian, since it's considered acceptable for a barbarian to have poor ranged attacks, and they have a better chance of surviving the fall when the wizard is hit and loses concentration.

then I guess that 14 DEX will have to do on a Longbow or a flying companion.

And so, your character is an archer with a poor dex.

Other players: “Why does your character suck Bob?”

When people want a melee character, they will recruit a barbarian, fighter or even a monk. “Ranged” might be a false entomology for Ranger, but nevertheless it has a powerful effect on expectations.

14 not bad for a back up plan.

Generally why I use medium armor over heavy and say 10 dexterity.

If you're using Shillelagh probably have a ranged cantrip or other spells

The barbarian has a 14 dex and a longbow!

Parties want a ranger to be ace at long range, not be a low hp barbarian.
Some people want their ally ranger to be long range. Maybe you're one of them. Some people demand their ally clerics/bards/druids be healbots.

What does their opinion have to do with what the player of the character wants to play? If they want a long range ace, they can play one.
