Seven Views of Mount Cannoli: Subjective Preferences in Geek Media

Overrated seems a little overstated :).
The above seems at contract with this:
It seems not very popular these days. I love cannoli but have observed many people at gatherings are not fond of them. Part of why I love them is my mom always had them at family gatherings. It is like trying to get someone to like those old fashioned style donuts. I live not far the North End and know what you mean. Cannoli are a very old fashioned pastry.
People rave about them to the high heavens, and then folks like Snarf or you or me are disappointed.

If they are praised to the sky but also disappointing those high expectations, and losing popularity generally, that sounds like the definition of "overrated". ;)

How is it contradicted? I am a cannoli fan but even I see most people don't like them when they are offered.

I didn't praise them. I said I like them but can see why lots of people don't (and attributed my like to having grown up on them). In fairness in previous threads I probably have praised them in jest when they have come under attack. But I get it. Not everyone likes cannoli. Not everyone likes the same thing when it comes to pastry. My favorite Italian pastry is ricotta pie but that is probably a pretty boring pastry for most people

The reason people praise them in the North End is because those are supposedly the best ones (people around here praise everything food related in the North End---it is Boston's Little Italy). But again my point was even a north end cannoli is not going to be so much better than a regular cannoli that it will turn a person who dislikes them into a fan. There is just only so much you can do to make a cannoli better

Do people broadly praise cannolis? Do people specifically praise the ones from the North End as amazing and delicious? Even mind-blowing?

My honest answers:

1) I think there is significantly less fanfare in cannoli praise as I have gotten older (we are a long way from "Leave the gun, take the cannoli"). But people who love them, really love them and praise them (I think often because of what they represent to people). 2) Yes, yes and yes. The North End gets a lot of praise. And I am sure people praise the cannoli there. I won't say it isn't warranted but I will also say the North End isn't what it used to be either. I will also say I think the praise of the north end cannoli, the claim that it is mind-blowing is misguided. IT. IS. A. CANNOLI. It is the single most basic Italian pastry and while I love them, I've had them for all sorts of places. They all taste like cannoli! Some are a little better, some are a little worse. But there is only so much wiggle room with them 3) Again I love cannoli but anyone claiming they've had their mind blown by one needs to try other kinds of pastry. This is like getting your socks knocked off by a bowl of cream of wheat

....admittedly, everything in the essay is literally true.

But the essay is about cannoli in the same way that Animal Farm is about a farm. It is completely about a farm, but also not. :)

Useful to note for third party readers, as Bedrock has made known that he doesn't engage with allegories.

I honestly can’t keep track of these kinds cryptic conversations on the forum
