D&D General The New York Times on D&D

So it’s on the player . Ask the dm before

If I’m in aa I don’t tell my friends to meet me at the pub unless im ready for that

Let’s go with your scenario. I’m dm Bob and I have my adventure prepped. A giant scorpion jumps out at you. Player y-stop the game I’m not ready . Can you change it to a mountain goat . No offense but just like Skyrim it’s on you as the player to download that mod ahead of time
I can’t even imagine this happening. Other players-they have a point and we are ok fighting 3 Billy goat gruff instead.
I’m sorry
1) the dm should look at their audience ahead of time and use common sense
2) a lot of this falls on the players
This is a silly example and not something that happens in real life.

Knowing your players and communicating about the adventure or campaign are two safety tools you're already using. X Cards or Lines and Veils are just other safety tools.

Well, ideally session zero should cover much of this, but there are places where that's either not possible (such a public or convention play) or it's something that didn't come up/wasn't thought of at the time. And unless the DM is clairvoyant or the player gets to read the DMs entire campaign notes beforehand, it's completely possible that something gets missed.

But you're convinced it's just there to bully poor defenseless DMs, so I don't think anything I'll say will enlighten you.

It’s in the book! They assume someone is going to use them

I know my argument is absurd but let’s play it out

Same scenario but your at the d&d convention Tostito bowl . Player raises the x! Guaranteed a judge comes over. Judge-hey Bob the spiders are scaring that person over. Can you take those out or I’m going to ask you to leave

Okay let's play into this absurd scenario:

DM: Okay what if we change them to giant wall-crawling geckos that spit out sticky stuff?

Player: That's awesome, thanks for your flexibility.

DM: No problem, let's keep the adventure going.

I would love to see the hand x in person. I’ve never used rape in my games or sex even but let’s say the zombies are eating the villagers. If one of my players says stop I’m scared or uncomfortable I’d probably be flummoxed but I’m not teaching this to really young children. We certainly don’t need an advisory like you would see on cigarettes etc

Maybe if those things bother you then maybe this game isn’t for you . Just like cod isn’t probably for people who hate guns or the conjuring isn’t for people who like ghosts etc etc
Except no, because every table gets to make their own D&D. What, exactly, is wrong with building a game that best suits the preferences of your particular group? Isn’t that just what we do when we are hanging out with friends?

Like, if it is your turn to host movie night and you know several of your friends hate horror films, do you insist on Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

But that’s in the article

There was no need for these changes. When I was little I watched Rudolph where 1 of the elves wanted to be a dentist. The show came out in 1964

There was no need to say. It’s no longer required that all dwarves be —-. Right you could always be a dentist even in the 70’s. What you have done is weakened the game

Orcs around goblins are no longer inherently evil! What are we doing here. Eventually it becomes a different game all together

Wotc already has a lot of haters for being greedy blah blah. Wotc gains nothing by doing this. You’re not bringing back the haters. Now you’ve got the New York Times and all other
Media shining a not so flattering piece on you

I don't understand why you are so staunchly opposed to this.

If you understand your players as well as you think you do, then the cards would never get used.

So why does this affect you? Why do you care so much?
