It changed with 4th edition. When I first started playing GURPS in the late 1980s, TL 7 was 1950s-2000 and included nuclear power, miniaturization, and computers. TL 8 in the old version included fusion power and robots. We're certainly not there yet.I'm not at all convinced by this timeline. I feel we are not quite in TL8 yet, which in the version of GURPS I had was supposed to start around 2000, but where we are maybe having a hint we might reach if we don't slide into another Dark Age.
The basis for Tech Levels changed at 4th edition. In 3e, it was largely on the basis of how much energy you could harness. Now it's mostly about the smallest things you can make and use. If it is revised again, there may well be another basis. It changed with 4th edition. Don't worry, it's only ten years away! We’re still in PL5 Information Age, since we haven’t yet developed practical fusion to enter PL6 Fusion Age.
