D&D (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

I think the orc shift has 2 reasons:

• Half-Orcs are traditional PC species.
• Orcs are prominently featured in Warcraft 3. And there they were depicted as an honorful people. Actually in parts closer to being good than their human enemies.*

*I know this is long ago. But WoW builds on that story. And this is still going on.

Agreed. I have no issue with adding orcs to the approved PC stable. But the gymnastics they're doing to make it happen mechanically and in the lore really throw into sharp relief how little reason there is to give the brass ring to the children of Gruumsh while denying it to so many others (goblins in particular are hard to fathom here).

Yeah. I would have been ok with goblins joining the orcs.

But then, you have to draw a line somewhere. And I especially love the aberration category now.
I think the new categorization overall is big improvement and makes the game more interesting.

I am really looking forward to the new MM and even though I might not like everything, it seems to be an overall improvement and gives a lot of new ideas.

And if I don't like a categorizartion, I will just change it.

Not that I think it's at all a real reason, but Pazio cornered the market on goblins and Kobold Press has it in the name...

I think it was a great stroke to make Goblinoids Fey, for several reasons: oen, Goblins in folklore are malevolent Fey, and two, it makes a Hobgoblin different from an Orc.

There won't be, that's not the purpose of the MM.

Unclear: the NPC Rave table in the 2014 DMG provided stealth playable options, so it is possible that the "Conversion Guide" might essentially provide playable options in a similar manner.

Having this confirmed now, my guess is that non-humanoid peoples like goblins, kobolds, kenku, etc. will still be able to be played as PCs, - I mean, we still have Monsters of the Multiverse and the Tasha’s custom species option. The default assumption will just be that they are not typically PCs.

What's more, I expect we will at some point see options that make them playable as Fey and whatnot.
