Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

As other people have said, it's not a big deal if the turns are moving fast. It sucks a lot more if the other people at the table are slow.

I, too, have scarring memories of playing high level 3.5E and setting there for literal hours at times, my character disabled, while a massive and complex battle raged.

Losing a turn isn't a big deal, but simultaneously is worse than having the character die.

Having a character killed off is rare enough that it's always interesting.
I think the context will matter for both losing a turn and losing a character, as far as whether it's interesting or suck.

Missing your turn isn't much fun, especially if you're talking multiple rounds in a row for something like 5E combat. It just feels like you don't get to play the game that everyone else is playing. Not saying it's better but character death can at least lead to meaningful/memorable moments if done well.

As others have said, 1) generally no dying is worse but it is still a pretty frustrating part of play, and 2) it's because you are losing agency.

And as others have said, With long turns it can become extremely frustrating. However, even with shorter turns it can be pretty frustrating if the combats are still only a few turns. Long or short, you've still been removed from 1-to-Many out of Few opportunities to make any of the decisions that affect the outcome of the situation.
