Kulan: Knightfall's Heroes of Carnell Game [IC]

Litrix shrugs
"Why is hard to understand in a creature so depraved."
"I joined this group, just after this Eike got, hm, demonized? Corrupted? He was always a bad apple if I understand correctly, but this...probably not his choice. He is beyond redemption now, a pawn in the greater game. Full story is a bit murky, but the stakes are high enough for dragons to involve themselves. So, serious."

He looks at the map and considers this from military commander perspective
"We will be outnumbered, they are expecting something if they recognized the zelekhut as something sent by someone else. In addition, we cannot stop there, not for a moment if this taint is as dangerous as it seems. So, my advice would be to try to slip quickly between Copse and The Wraith and just run directly to the temple. That is, Maur will run, the rest of us will jog, and Angus will walk in circles around us. Do we have options to disable Eike and get him out of the area without killing? I don't."

Phar stood quietly listening to everything, pondering all that had been said. Inwardly, he chastised himself for not being better prepared. He'd spent a lifetime learning to rely on his ability to think his way through problems, even seeking magical enhancement to push his vast intellect to impossible levels but, despite that, despite knowing they were travelling to the Gloom, he hadn't thought to research this place and share that knowledge with the Maur or the others so that they could be thoroughly prepared to protect themselves from its environmental dangers.

Taint was no different than fire or water or even the air they breathed here. If they had planned to go to the Elemental Plane of Fire, would they not have chosen to protect themselves from that element? It was just the nature of the realm, bleeding in from the Plane of Graves.

Phar felt like a child. An idiot.

Maur surprised Phar again. Surely this Inevitable would be a boon to their mission if it were to join them. Still, it could not protect them from the effects of the Gloom.

Angus spits in disgust. "My nature-based powers are likely to be useless in the Gloom. I have to touch the earth with ma' hand and allow the power to flow through me, in order ta' use 'em. If I try it, I'll likely be contaminated, tainted as ye say, by the evil of the place. I'll not be doing that, then. But one thing that does work is me sword arm. I'll be backing ye up with strength of arms, then, because ye can always trust yer own steel."

Locke:
I’ve seen all manner of dark and evil, yet what you describe is hard to grasp. Taint?
So our presence in this place subjects us to risk? Simply traveling through it?

Does that mean that all we will encounter are beyond hope? Hmm. That makes this easier in a sense. We don’t have to wonder about evil intent, and if not evil, we’d be doing them a kindness dispatching them.

Fine then. How long can we stay in the Gloom without becoming irrevocably part of the landscape, and when we leave, how and how long to recover?

What’s the plan? And how is the best way to get to this Elke? Why in all the places terrestrial and otherwise would he come here anyway?

"We are ill-prepared to enter this place, I fear. But there is nothing we can do about it now. How much more powerful will Eike become if we delay?

We must not tarry long in that place. The journey is short but it will be difficult. We must leave before nightfall lest we find ourselves beset on all sides by the hordes of the undead and impossible odds.

If what Rikiron says is true,"
out of respect for both Maur and the Inevitable, Phar used its name, "killing Eike in that place will make him more powerful. We must, instead, subdue him and extract him.

I fear that will be a task far more challenging than destroying him."

The elf paused for several moments before speaking,

"Our mission is to retrieve the necklace(ring? I forget). Perhaps we can barter for it or steal it from Eike. With that done, if we cannot defeat him, I can dismiss him from the plane of the Gloom, As I did the Nightshade. If it succeeds - which is not guaranteed - we will not know to which plane Eike will be dismissed. But, doing so is swift and will allow us an opportunity to retreat and regroup. Eventually, if we choose to hunt him down, I can attempt to divine his location. It will take time, and Eike will become more powerful - but we, too, shall be more powerful."

It was the plan of an elf. A being that had one thousand years to wait.

"But if we choose to do this - even as a contingency - it would be helpful to acquire some of his blood, or an item or, even a hair so that I may have a material link to him."

TL;DR

So yeah, contingency plan to get the item we want(using stealth, slight of hand, Diplomacy or whatever) and dismiss Eike from the Gloom. Then we can GTFO and track him down later. Especially if killing him in the Gloom will make him more powerful.

Angus thinks for a moment, and then smiles. "Ah be a' thinkin' that what we need is a large sleigh. You slow pokes could plop yerselves inside it, and I could pull it. 'Twould be nothing for me. And Ah'm fast, even when Ah be pullin'."
STR: 22, Push/Drag: 7,800 Lbs. (3.9 Tons.) Light Load: 0 - 519 Lbs., Medium Load: 520 - 1,038 Lbs., Heavy Load: 1,039 - 1,560 Lbs.
Base Speed: 80 ft. And remember, push / drag stats are for things not normally designed to be easily moved. A sleigh or wagon is specifically designed to be pulled at a high rate of speed.

To Phar:
Maur considers wizards words. But at the end he shakes his head
"We don't know enough about The Gloom. It may be you just send Eike to our plane somewhere. And wherever that is, it might wrack havoc. And if he goes just to the edge, we've done nothing."

To Angus:
"Good idea, I can create one from wood...but that will mean one powerful spell less for the fight. This one is from the fourth circle so fairly powerful stuff."

OOC: Craft domain 4th level Minor Creation - I can create 10 cubic feet of wood - if we do it like two long sled-like poles and short planks across, it could fit

"We don't know enough about The Gloom. It may be you just send Eike to our plane somewhere. And wherever that is, it might wrack havoc. And if he goes just to the edge, we've done nothing."
"That was the intention but only if we had the item first. I did think of the fact that Eike could create havoc but that such havoc might be an acceptible risk compared to what he might become and the damage he might cause in the future.

That said, I would prefer we risk no innocence."

Angus says, "Couldn't we just take a real one with us, instead of using a spell? And if not, couldn't you just prepare a scroll, so you wouldn't have to memorize it?"

To Angus:
"Good idea, I can create one from wood...but that will mean one powerful spell less for the fight. This one is from the fourth circle so fairly powerful stuff."
"This could be the solution for our Eike.

I do not beleive that saving an hour or two will be beneficial - at least, not going in. In fact, caution over speed may be ideal. Perhaps, instead, Maur save his powerful spell and, if he does not need it in the battle, he can create the sled when our mission is complete. We can place Eike unconscious body upon it and we can all board it and we can flee quickly."

OOC: This is post one of two.

Rikiron first points to the battle site marked in the The Hermit's journal as Boots' Hill. "I did fly over this spot. There is a very old looking large tree there. Its limbs are twisted and covered in thorns. I did see what looked like discarded and rusted armour scattered around it in addition to dozens of blanched skeletons."

The inevitable points to the woods marked as the Corpse Copse. "These woods appeared quite dense from the air. As I said, the demon was swallowed up by the trees. It fell in the forested hills between the two mounts. The trees of the woodland appeared to be blackened and dead, but there is obviously something animating them." He points to a spot on the map closer to where the shrine is marked. "Here, there is a large graveyard right at the edge of the woods. A very large crypt stands at its centre. Its eastern edge near comes to the edge of the Wicked Hills. The wood surrounds the entire graveyard. I saw a few skeletons wandering the graveyard. There will likely be more at night."

Rikiron next points to the area of the map denoted as the Roan Lizard Hills. "This is the easiest way to the shrine on foot, if you choose not to fly. I did see signs of predation, so perhaps this name means there are large lizards that hunt there."

"Hopefully, only large lizards and not some sort of dragon," Aureus muses.

"If there is a dragon, I saw no signs of it," the inevitible replies. He then points at the cursed area west of the hills. "This befouled area is more widespread than on this map. The blight of the demiplane has surrounded not only this tall mount here," Rikiron points to The Wraith. "But also these other lower mountains." He points to the Bleeding Mounts. "This one, this Wraithmount, was shrouded in deep bands of swirling haze. The effect looked almost cyclonic." The inevitable points to the tower symbol near the Bleeding Mounts. "This tower is actually located in the mountains. It was visible from the air. It is extremely tall. But, it should be here." He points to the more western peak. "It stands at the top of this peak."

An idiot.
Aureus points to the Mire of the Indigo Man. "What about this?"

"No, I did not have a chance to fly over those bogs or the mountains west of them." Rikiron points to the mountain that is east of the Mire. "This mountain is very tall. It is probably the tallest one I saw in the demiplane." The inevitable turns to look at the demiplane's barrier. "There, it is so tall you can even see it from here, although the barrier makes it look distorted."

Rikiron points to the hazy outline of the mountain in the distance. The massive mountain rises above everything else in The Gloom.

Aureus checks Caerth's notes. "Hmm, it's called The Towering Splinter."

The inevitable nods. "A suitable name for it." He turns back to the map and points to the mountains west of the Mire. "I did see these mountains. While not as tall, they seemed ominous."

"The Decaying Crags," Aureus notes. "What about this, here?" She points to the spot The Hermit marked with a '6' then flips to Caerth's notes. "The Angel's Tomb."

"No, I didn't fly over it, but I did see a massive stone block rising out of the trees in that direction." Rikiron points to the mountains east and southeast of The Wicked Hills. "I did not fly anywhere near these mountain ranges. These mounts," he points to The Deadly Peaks. "Are tall, but not as tall as the one you called the Splinter."

Rikiron points to the spot noted as the Shrine of Utter Evil in the Wicked Hills. "The shrine is indeed only a shrine, not a temple. It is less than 10 feet wide and is surround by a few trees and bushes, as well as low walls that form a square around it except for an opening in front of the shrine. Two large skeletons flank the opening against the wall."

"Undead?"

"I would say yes," Rikiron replies.

He points at the hill markings on the map that surround the shrine. "All of these hills are covered in the bones of the dead... and the undead. There are a few low crags in these hills. I believe you would call them foothills. There are also several rocky areas filled with dust and dunes, as well as patches of greenry that are as foul as the rest of the surrounding hills."

The inevitible looks towards Maur "The bones of the undead scattered throughout the hills won't appear to be undead unless you use magic to search for them, champion. These evils will remain silent and hidden until you are vulnerable or get too close to the shrine. While most will be skeletons, there will be zombies and other restless undead... and perhaps greater dangers. This is some of the knowledge granted to me by Lord Moradin. You should expect undead to rise to face you as you approach the shrine. It will not matter if you walk or fly."

Rikiron replies to Angus. "You are probably correct, warrior. I would advise caution when using any sort of magic. Your nature magic could heal your allies but taint you."

I’ve seen all manner of dark and evil, yet what you describe is hard to grasp. Taint?
Litrix shrugs
"Why is hard to understand in a creature so depraved."
"I joined this group, just after this Eike got, hm, demonized? Corrupted? He was always a bad apple if I understand correctly, but this...probably not his choice. He is beyond redemption now, a pawn in the greater game. Full story is a bit murky, but the stakes are high enough for dragons to involve themselves. So, serious."
"You are correct. This person, this Eike, has been completely corrupted," Rikiron says to Litrix. "Assume that it will fight any attempt to force redemption upon it."

"Yes, travelling through The Gloom will be risky. Do not eat anything that grows there or drink any water you find unless you are certain your magicks can purify what you find," Rikiron replies to Locke. "There will be creatures you encounter that will not detect as evil but that are corrupted by the plane. It will be better to kill such creatures rather than leave them to suffer."

"I cannot give you an answer as to how more powerful the creature will become if not killed in the present. Only the gods will be able to fathom how much more powerful this new fiend will become in the future."

The inevitable turns to address Phar directly. "Fire can be used to purify anything you kill. This will keep the dead from rising as undead. Of course, using fire will be risky as it will attract the other denizens of the demiplane. And, the fire used must be either very hot or magical."

"I am uncertain what effect, if any, dismissal magic will have against Eike. Yes, He was born a mortal creature of this world of yours. But, It is not mortal any longer. If you successfully banish the creature, it might end up on the Plane of Graves, but it is just as likely that Eike will be sent to somewhere else this world." The inevitable pauses. "Or, if The Gloom is this new Eike's birthplace, then the magic will do nothing to it."

Maur considers the creature for the moment, speaking suddenly very quietly.
"I want you to consider your words very carefully, zelekhut."
He intentionally doesn't use Rikiron's name.
"Free will is a heavy burden, heavier than the chains you wield. You are now not bound by duty, but your own choice. Your. Own. The Gloom is a place where the immortal may fail just as well as we mortals, and you step back, away from its grasp. Every soul, whether mortal or eternal, is shaped upon the forge of our choices. Fear is not what holds a being back — it is the weight of knowing a choice cannot be undone. That is neither weakness nor failure — it is a choice, and choice is what shapes the soul, or being, especially for one such as you. Even the smallest stroke of the hammer shapes the blade. Even the slightest effort can alter fate. If I tasked you with the fight, it would be easy, no choice required. When you have a choice and choose to put yourself at risk for greater good, that's what makes you powerful."

He folds his arms, locking joints clicking and metal sliding along the metal not unlike the sound inevitable makes when it moves.
"You have done what was asked, and more with destroying the vrock. But I ask you this — when all paths are perilous, what is the measure of a being? It is not in surviving, but in deciding what is worth risking survival for. Even a minor act of aid — a diversion, a message, a single strike — could tilt the tide of battle in our favor."
"I understand your words and your motives, Maur Deepdelver, Champion of Moradin. I do not sense that you wish to trick me in any way, but you say 'for greater good'. I am an inevitable. I am not an angel. Good is your moral not mine." Rikiron turns towards The Gloom. "However, I do admit that I feel the urge to punish this creature for its crime."

The inevitable looks back at Maur. "Its crime, to me, was it fleeing justice. Yes, it killed a man. But causing death is not always a crime unless the land's mortal law says it is a crime. In this case, Eike fled before justice could be determined. Yes, maybe that makes him guilty of the young one's death as well, but it was his unwillingness to face justice that concerns me. Evil. Good. That is not my morality. I am a creature of Law."

Neurotic said:
Maur takes a deep breath, unfolding his arms and taking out his silver hammer.
"You have given us knowledge, and that is a blessing, mission accomplished. But when you return to your kind, I ask you to think — if your purpose is law and justice, does it end at duty, or is there room for choice in service to the greater good? In the silence of your watchful hours, meditate upon this — does duty alone make you, or does the will to act beyond it? You, after all, are not a golem."

Striking the small hammer upon the shield marked with holy symbol of Moradin his voice changes to deep drone of a blessing.
"May the All-Father bless you, as stone blesses steel with its unyielding form. May The Forge Master temper your resolve, that it never wavers, may The Soulforger watch over your steps, that they may find purpose in the path you choose. The Forge Master keep your essence whole, that you may remain a force of order in a world of chaos. Go now with wisdom and strength."
TaranTheWanderer said:
Maur surprised Phar again. Surely this Inevitable would be a boon to their mission if it were to join them. Still, it could not protect them from the effects of the Gloom.
The inevitable looks at the sky. "I wonder what Lord Moradin would say to both of us in this moment. He has sent me to you and I have served. Is that enough?" Rikiron shakes his head. "I cannot answer that question, and I do not think you can either. Do not forget that you chose me and not an angel or another being of good for your Calling."

"Then, why not ask Moradin?" Cruel Justice suggests, loudly.

Rikiron nods and looks at Maur. "What say you champion? Will you leave the choice up to your god? It should be a simple thing for you to commune with him, correct? Or do you need time? You will need to prepare before you enter the demiplane. And perhaps Lord Moradin can give you more knowledge about what the future might hold.

The inevitable looks back towards the barrier. "I will abide by Lord Moradin's choice in this matter. If he leaves it up to you and I, then I will leave this plane and return home after I have escorted your beasts back to the druid. If Lord Moradin orders that my task is to be extended, then I will go with you into The Gloom to face its dangers and this Eike who has fled justice."
