Your Pizza Order

Asparagus is on the Shame Basement list, but I see Broccoli Rabe on a lot of fancy brick oven pizzas.

Every time I go to a restaurant that's not fast food or a chain, I'll be reading the menu, hmmm this sounds good, until I come to the obligatory odd see what a great chef I am ingredient. This immediately makes it a hard pass and is annoying. Some ingredients don't and shouldn't go together.

On that list, I think my only no-go's are bamboo shots (texture issues) and pineapple (will send me into a full-blown panic attack).

And sure, pizza is shareable with the slices and all but it's also highly individualistic what you prefer on it. Might be a different pizza culture here than in the US but why wouldn't everyone order a pizza of their own? Not only will there be less bickering, it will also last you all evening rather than just one slice.

Asparagus is on the Shame Basement list, but I see Broccoli Rabe on a lot of fancy brick oven pizzas. I hate broccoli rabe. It's basically asparagus but worse, but if people are putting that stuff on pizza, I'm surprised nobody is doing asparagus.

I like asparagus and maybe it might go through some chemical changes and get a different flavor profile being in a pizza oven, like the way broccoli really changes after getting all roasted, but right now I have a hard time imagining it as an appealing pizza topping.

Broccoli Rabe is great and asparagus is pretty good, but I don't think either goes particularly well on a pizza.

MAYBE a white pizza with garlic.

Just to be clear, not "eat your broccoli" broccoli. Broccoli Rabe. It's a really harsh, bitter, nutty, kick in the face. Waldy's in NYC would pair it with pepperoni, and it kind of worked, but I rarely ordered it.

I don't know where you're at but we usually do individual pizzas in the UK also, unless a lot of people involved are small eaters and not picky! It just makes sense.

However, in the US, a lot of pizzas, especially from good local pizza places/smaller chains are like, staggeringly large. And barely less expensive in smaller sizes (or the next size down from large is excessively small). Often very "rich" too (i.e. a lot of dough/cheese/sauce/toppings). Like, where my wife used to be based, the nearest two good pizza places, if you got a large, even two people probably couldn't polish that off in one night without effort and focus (and not feeling great about it lol), and one person would typically eat less than 1/3rd of it. So if everyone ordered one of those each, everyone would be having to lug home a lot of pizza (not a disaster but...). At least in my experience.

Stuff from chains like Domino's, Pizza Hut and so on is typically a similar size in the US to elsewhere, but to be real those places, at their best, sucked hard compared to local places/chains in all the areas I've spent significant time in the US, even rural Mass.
